Comeback Sauce Is The Southern Staple You'll Coat On Everything
By AMBERLY MCKEE
Comeback sauce has its roots in Mississippi and is made with mayonnaise and ketchup. It can also include Worcestershire sauce, garlic, onion, mustard, and chili or hot sauce.
Each ingredient serves an essential purpose. The ketchup provides sweetness, the mayonnaise lends its creamy texture, and Worcestershire sauce adds flavor.
The sauce was originally made for salads, but its uses have expanded. Now, it’s used as a dipping sauce for fried foods like chicken nuggets, onion rings, fish, and fries.
Mississippi native and television chef Cat Cora told the New York Times, “Growing up [...], we dipped crackers in it, put it on salads, fish, shrimp, [and] fried green tomatoes.”
The simplest way to get authentic comeback sauce is to visit Mississippi, but if that’s not a possibility, you can always make it yourself or buy a bottle online.
