Is Jersey Mike's Healthier Than Subway?
By JOEL STICE
Subway can be found almost anywhere in the U.S., and while the chain might be a bit over-expanded, its "Eat Fresh" motto keeps it popular with those seeking a fast, healthy lunch. However, Jersey Mike’s is another sandwich chain on the rise, with more than 2,000 locations so far — if you’re in need of a healthy sandwich, where should you go?
The unhealthiest sandwich on Subway’s menu is the chicken and bacon ranch melt, which has 610 calories, 32 gm fat, 1,340 mg sodium and 6 gm sugar. On the other hand, Jersey Mike's original Italian sub has 940 calories with 53 gm fat, 2,351 mg sodium and 11 gm sugar, so if we're only judging by the worst offenders, Subway has the slimmer option.
Regarding the chains' healthiest sandwiches, Subway’s oven-roasted chicken sandwich only has 270 calories and 3.5 grams of fat, while Jersey Mike’s chicken Philly sandwich has 670 calories, with 22 gm fat, 1990 mg sodium and 10 gm sugar. If you're not looking to break your diet with a big, indulgent sandwich, eat fresh and stick with Subway.
