One of the joys of traveling is experiencing new foods from different cultures, and different countries also have laws regulating what foods are sold. America is notoriously lax about these standards, as exemplified by the new warning label only seen on Coca-Cola sold outside of the States.

In late September of 2022, Mexico became the most recent country to implement more informative labels on foods high in saturated fat, trans fat, calories, sodium, or sugar. Because of this law, Coca-Cola sodas now feature new labels that read “Excess in Sugar” and “Contains caffeine, avoid in children.”

Other countries like Chile, Peru, and Uruguay have similar laws in effect, and hopefully, the practice continues to spread. Reddit users applauded the new warnings, with one user saying we “should probably have the high sugar warning in all countries,” and another saying, “Just got back from Mexico, was a nice surprise to see those [labels].”
