The Delicious Sauce You Never Thought To Add To Waffles
By RACHAEL GROW
One of the best ways to eat waffles is drenching them in your favorite syrup to deliver the ideal mouthful of sweetness. Some of the best waffle recipes come from family cookbooks that have been passed down for generations, but there is one special sauce that not all waffle lovers may have tried before.
Generally referred to as "white sauce" or "waffle sauce," this traditional Mennonite recipe consists of a rich, creamy vanilla sauce that can be drizzled over waffles (and a variety of other items) and requires just a few household ingredients. There are a few variations of the white sauce recipe that allow you to infuse your waffles with vanilla lusciousness.
Try sprinkling fresh nutmeg into your waffle sauce for an extra dash of flavor; as Barefeet in the Kitchen explains, “I started grating fresh nutmeg over my grandmother's waffles with waffle sauce years ago and ever since I've been grating nutmeg every chance I get.” Cinnamon might be a great addition, too, if you're feeling experimental.
