The Key To Re-Creating Cracker Barrel's Hash Brown Casserole
By MATT LARDIE
Cracker Barrel's Southern, homestyle dishes are some of the most sought-after copycat recipes on Reddit communities and Facebook groups. A quick search for its recipes will bring up hundreds of results from the restaurant’s menu, but a great recipe to start with is one of its classics, which needs just a few healthy tweaks to get right.
The hash brown casserole at Cracker Barrel is one of those must-order breakfast items and many recipes call for cream of chicken soup to create its creamy texture. But if salt intake is a concern, the key is to create a roux using a low-sodium chicken bouillon rather than a high-sodium can of soup.
You also want to skip the shortcut of using frozen hash browns because these products contain high levels of sodium. Instead, take the time to grate potatoes and onions and keep it to a ratio of about half an onion to three or four potatoes and you won’t have to worry about hypertension when enjoying this Cracker Barrel classic.
