Apart from damaging the heart, liver, and pancreas, alcohol also damages the brain. In a recently posted TikTok, Dr. Dawn Bantel, NMD, cited a new study published in Nature that reports brain shrinkage in people who engage in just a small amount of regular drinking.
TikTok users commented on Dr. Bantel’s post with concerned questions of what constitutes a “small amount.” The Portland Clinic defines more than seven drinks per week as the cutoff between moderate and heavy drinking for women, while it’s 14 drinks per week for men.
The average American consumes around 9.5 drinks per week, as reported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. While many commenters on TikTok were unhappy with this recent news, others found it encouraging in their journey to quit drinking.
