For the first time in its 29-year history, Chipotle released a new chicken dish, Pollo Asado — an authentic Mexican dish served with pico de gallo and fresh tortillas. According to Restaurant Business, the original adobo chicken is the best-selling protein at Chipotle, so how does Pollo Asado stack up?
Pollo asado is typically chicken marinated in citrus juices and ground cumin, but Chipotle’s version is made from dark meat chicken, seasoned with garlic, lime, and guajillo peppers, and grilled on the plancha. Guajillo peppers have a sweet, berry-like taste, and are commonly used in mole sauce.
A serving of pollo asado in a burrito, salad, or burrito bowl can cost around $10.85, depending on the location. According to a Chipotle press release, the pollo asado is only available for a limited time, which Chipotle employees estimate will be a month or two.
Chipotle’s pollo asado comes in larger chunks, flavored with lime juice, garlic, and guajillo peppers, and it is slightly less spicy than adobo chicken. A serving of pollo asado has 210 calories, 12 grams of fat, 22 grams of protein, and 3 grams of carbs, making it a filling dish.
Now, for the taste — the pollo asado chicken is moist and has a delicious, bold and flavorful spice seasoning that isn’t overly spicy. The charred grill flavor goes very well with the brightness of the lime and peppers, and combining it with some pico de gallo and sour cream enhances all the flavors.
