Why An Old Anthony Bourdain Video Is Coming Under Fire
By CRYSTAL ANTONACE
Food critic Anthony Bourdain was known for his unapologetic authenticity — from showcasing the atrocities of war, to speaking about Guy Fieri’s wardrobe. Bourdain was able to speak about the harsh realities of human existence, and six years after his death his words are still making new impacts.
A clip from Season 10 Episode 1 of Bourdain’s show “Parts Unknown” was posted to Twitter by @theMcKenzist, featuring Bourdain speaking to his Singaporean dining companions about their maids. She refers to them as “the opiate of the masses,” while he responds by calling the arrangement “bourgeois.”
Many users agreed with Bourdain, while others believed the chef to be hypocritical — as user @fredleept put it, “Flying around the world…is not bourgeois?” User @GrannyWeatherw4 accused him of "show[ing] up in their country and tell[ing] them they are living wrong and should follow his system."
