You Should Never Eat The Skin Or Seeds Of Pawpaw. Here's Why
By KAREN HART
The pawpaw fruit is a popular and delicious fruit who’s taste has been described as a mix of mango and banana, with some people tasting hints of pineapple. This creamy, “custard-like” fruit is great in pies, smoothies, or eaten as is, but one thing you should never eat are its skin and seeds.
Before you enjoy this “hipster banana,” make sure to discard the seeds and never bite into the skin, as both have been proven toxic to humans. The seeds contain vomit-inducing alkaloids in the endosperm, and if chewed, a poison is released that can wreak havoc on your digestive system.
Interestingly, the seeds don’t pose the same problems if swallowed whole, but it’s still recommended that pregnant women avoid this fruit altogether. Pawpaws have a very low shelf life of just two days, but they can be stored in the refrigerator for a week or in the freezer in freezer-safe storage bags for six months.
