The New Pizza Topping That's Even Worse Than Pineapple

If you're still coming to terms with the idea that some people willingly put pineapple on their pizza, you may want to turn back now. That's right, just when you thought people were finished with tropical fruits better suited for boat drinks than pizza, here comes along a new, super-controversial pizza topping — kiwi (via My Recipes). Yes, really.

Now if you're one of those folks who thinks fruit of any kind has no business associating itself with cheese pizza, then prepare yourself –  it's about to get weird. We don't have a crystal ball, but kiwi pizza could be poised to shake up the pizza world and open up the fruit floodgates like never before.

What madman thought of kiwi pizza?!

Let's get right to the question that everybody is wondering... "Who put kiwi on pizza?" While it's entirely possible that some pizzeria in China — the kiwi's native land – has been adding it to pizza for years, that doesn't seem to be the case. According to Reddit, it looks like this cheese freakshow emerged from a pizzeria in Denmark. Maybe the pizzeria's owners had never seen kiwi and perhaps thought they were some sort of hairy green olives?

More than one commenter on Reddit said that most of the country's pizza shops were owned by people of Middle Eastern descent and attributed the kiwi topping to that. What we can say is that people naturally have very mixed feelings about a pizza covered in kiwi. "Every day we stray further from what Italians consider a pizza," said one person on Reddit. "I would try that. Just to see how it is," said another curious commenter.

Will other fruits also invade pizza?

Here's the thing. Pineapple is certainly a pizza topping that people have opinions about, but apparently it was really just the gateway drug for putting fruit on pizza. Maybe we won't start seeing kiwi on pizza at mainstream chains like Papa John's and Pizza Hut just yet, but pizzerias that like to push the envelope might try it.

People on Twitter shared some of the other fruits that are finding there way onto a pizza — everything from strawberries to peaches! We're not talking a fruity dessert pizza either, but cheese, tomato sauce, and actual fruit! Of course, all pizza toppings at one time probably seemed a little odd. Who knows, maybe in 500 years kiwi will be just as commonplace on pizza as pepperoni.
