The Real Reason Burger King UK Just Became Burger Queen

There's a new monarch in town at Burger King UK! Last year, BK sponsored the British football club (soccer team, for those of us across the pond) Stevenage FC. To promote the overlooked team, the chain launched the Stevenage Challenge, inviting FIFA players to draft soccer stars to the team and share their games on social media (via Ogilvy).

According to a recent press release, the challenge turned "a fourth division men's English soccer club that fans barely knew" into "possibly the smallest team in the real world into the biggest club in the online gaming world."

Now, they're giving Stevenage FC's women's team the same treatment. "Playing for Stevenage FC can be hard," the ad reads (via YouTube). "Playing for the women's team shouldn't be harder."

To promote their partnership with the women's team, BK has dropped special edition Burger Queen jerseys available at the Stevenage Football Club online shop.

Burger King is working to support the women's team

"After successfully spotlighting the talent of the Stevenage FC men's team last year, we wanted to do the same for the women's team in 2020," Soco Nunez, Marketing Director of Burger King UK, said in the Stevenage FC press release. "The women's team faces the same challenges and hurdles as the men's team and it's only fair that it receive the same support from our brand with an equal sponsorship."

The press release also mentioned the enthusiasm the brand feels for the new collab. "We are thrilled to be continuing our partnership with Burger King and the support that the brand is showing for the women's team is unmatched," Stevenage FC's CEO Alex Tunbridge added. "The sponsorship from Burger King will be used to help grow the women's program and support the team."

Jerseys are available in adult and junior sizes in two different color schemes: the red and white that the Stevenage FC women's team wears at home, and the black and yellow that they wear for away games. Fans can preorder the jerseys now to show their support for the team.
