The Onion Ring Rating Instagram Account You Never Knew Lorde Secretly Runs

Would you cringe if you knew that we'd never listened to a Lorde song before we knew she was an onion ring savant? It's true. The singer, songwriter and pop culture icon from New Zealand (who once famously told The Guardian that being friends with Taylor Swift was "like having a friend with very specific allergies") began critiquing the onion rings she ate wherever she toured in 2017. Her anonymous account, @onionringsworldwide had 24 followers before a fan tipped off the media (via Vanity Fair).

"I feel like it reads like the kind of thing a pop star would do to look relatable, which I wasn't doing," she explained to Jimmy Fallon at the time (via Youtube). After it went viral, Lorde (also known as Ella Yelich-O'Connor) bravely resisted the temptation to post another onion ring review until December 2020. Guess what? She's back. On one of her first reviews after her painfully long hiatus, Lorde wrote that "I'd get a smile and a wink from waitstaff— it got embarrassing, you know? But it occurred to me that some things are too good to let the internet spoil" (via The Gram). The onion rings that she sampled from the Crusty Crab fish and chip shop in Russell, New Zealand, (and which Lorde described as having a "reconstituted onion pulp situation") received a respectable 3.5/5. We have just one word to describe the comeback: Hallelujah.

These are Lorde's most highly-rated onion rings

As you might expect from an artist who sings songs with titles like "Buzzcut Season," "Dope Ghost," and "Homemade Dynamite," Lorde's onion ring reviews are nothing short of glorious. Browse through the nine different onion rings that she's so-far rated on her Instagram, and it's 100 percent clear that the artist knows what she's talking about. She describes onion rings' character — and is particularly pleased with "humble, honest" ones (via Instagram) — is on the constant lookout for texture and thickness; and, finally, the rings' all-important "crumb flavor" is never lost on her (via Instagram).

Lorde is also an onion ring perfectionist. So far, only two onion rings have earned a 4.5/5, the highest rating the singer is yet to doll out. In June 2017, while in Tennessee, Lorde posted a review of a tempura onion ring with "delicious chewy batter" and a "slightly spicy (totally non-traditional) sauce." More recently, the singer ate onion rings at Fergburger in Queenstown, New Zealand, which she described as "so good I forgot to take a pic until the end."
