The Frozen Dairy Queen Secret Menu Item You Need To Know

Some drinks seem to taste better when they're not straight off the menu. In this case, it's a frozen remake of a classic winter beverage at Dairy Queen that proves the theory. You may remember the fast food chain brought back its frozen hot chocolate drink in November 2020 for the fall and winter season after fans petitioned for it to be revived (via Taste of Home).

For those who haven't tried it yet, Dairy Queen's frozen hot chocolate is a deliciously cool way to beat the heat this summer, as evidenced by its popularity online among the thousands who petitioned to bring it back. The drink is made with Dairy Queen's signature vanilla soft serve ice cream, blended with decadent cocoa fudge, and topped off with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup. While this drink isn't a staple on the regular menu, it is a mainstay for those who know Dairy Queen's secret menu. Plus, it is super easy to order.

How to order DQ's secret menu frozen hot chocolate

If you decide to cool off during the dog days of summer with this cold, sweet treat, try to avoid using the secret menu name "frozen hot chocolate." Some staffers won't necessarily know what you're talking about if you ask for it by name since the secret menu isn't a real thing they're required to know. Whether you're at the drive-thru, placing an order to-go, or dining inside, ask, instead, if they can add ice to your hot chocolate with swirls of whipped cream and chocolate syrup. Even better, you may be able to order this frozen decadence all year long, depending on the location.

Not into thick drinks, blizzards, or shakes? According to Eat This, Not That!, you can mix things up with a frozen hot chocolate slushie for a thinner, more slurpable option. Just order a slushie mix combined with chocolate fudge and vanilla soft serve ice cream to get a similar effect as the iced hot chocolate. If you'd prefer to dig in with a spoon, however, you might want to order the chocolate fudge blended with soft serve only. You can also add other flavors into the drink like peanut butter or caramel, according to Wide Open Eats. Oh, and don't forget to ask for the whipped cream topping or chocolate drizzle for the perfect finish.

There's even a trick if you love marshmallows in your hot chocolate

For marshmallow lovers, half the fun of ordering a hot chocolate is scooping out the ooey-gooey melted marshmallows and eating them first. Even if you are perfectly fine allowing the marshmallows to melt in your hot chocolate without eating them off the top, it can feel like something is missing if hot chocolate isn't topped with a layer of marshmallows. Luckily, there's a Dairy Queen hack for that too. According to Wide Open Eats, you can add marshmallow creme to pretty much anything on the menu, including the secret menu frozen hot chocolate.

While there's an entire marshmallow creme Blizzard alone on the secret menu according to Wide Open Eats, you can also use that creme to level-up your frozen hot chocolate. For those who love it all mixed into their cup of hot chocolate, ask for marshmallow creme to be blended in with the other ingredients. That way, you'll have little pockets of marshmallow creme throughout. If you prefer it on top, you can also just ask for a layer of marshmallow creme under your whipped cream topping. Either way, you'll end up with the perfect cup of frozen hot chocolate from Dairy Queen.

But frozen hot chocolate isn't the only secret drink to know about at DQ

A thick frozen hot chocolate isn't the only Dairy Queen take on secret menu drinks worth trying. There's actually a way you can order a spoon-worthy coffee from the ice cream chain. According to Wide Open Eats, a coffee Blizzard can be ordered and should be added to your bucket list of secret menu items to order at least once. The coffee Blizzard is perfect for those who want the decadence of an ice-cold frozen sweet treat with the added benefit of a caffeine kick. Fortunately, it's quite easy to order too. Just ask for coffee syrup in one of your Blizzards.

Just like the frozen hot chocolate, you can also simply order iced coffee blended in with soft serve. The combination will give you that scoop-able ice cream quality rather than an iced or frozen coffee. The best part of all is that this secret menu item is so incredibly customizable too. You can ask for chocolate fudge to be added in for a mocha spin on it or you could order it with caramel for another sweet twist. Of course, you can always add in other mix-ins like chocolate chunks or ask for whipped cream on top to polish off the ice cream-coffee combo.
