Is Walmart Open On Christmas 2021?

It happens to the best of us: you're running around trying to make everything perfect for Christmas Day, only to realize at the very last minute you forgot to purchase an essential Christmas dinner ingredient, have run out of wrapping paper, or never remembered to pick up that last gift on your list. Usually when these things happen, a quick run to Walmart or another grocery chain can solve all of these problems in just a single trip. But what happens if you don't realize you've forgotten these things until the very last minute — as in, you run out of sugar or ribbons on Christmas Day itself?

Ever since Walmart opened its first Superstore in 1988, combining both groceries and merchandise into a one-stop shopping experience, the company has pretty much become synonymous with convenience (via Walmart). To make the shopping experience even easier, many Walmart Superstore locations are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Naturally, this has caused shoppers to grow accustomed to being able to run to Walmart to grab whatever they need, no matter what day of the week or hour of the day it may be. But will Walmart be open on Christmas 2021?

Walmart will be closed on Christmas Day

Though convenience and accessibility are important to the company, Walmart will not be open on Christmas Day 2021. While they do stay open for most other holidays, all Walmart locations typically close for Christmas Day itself, shares Country Living, and the 2021 holiday season is not likely to be different. This gives employees time to enjoy the holiday with their family, friends, and loved ones.

If you happen to run out of an essential item and realize it on Christmas Eve, you might still be in luck. Most Walmart locations will be open on Christmas Eve, although many do close their doors early, so shoppers should check the hours of their local Walmart before heading out on their errands. In a 2016 press release, Walmart explained stores would be closing around 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve for the same reason they are not open on Christmas Day.

If you really are stuck on Christmas morning without an essential item, there are still other convenience and grocery stores that plan to remain open. According to Good Housekeeping, stores like Safeway, Morton Williams, Giant Food, Rite Aid, 7-Eleven, and Cumberland Farms will most likely be open on Christmas. So if you find yourself in a holiday jam, one of these other stores will just have to do until Walmart opens its doors again on December 26. But hey — at least then you can get what you need and make all your holiday returns in one single trip.
