Pop-Tarts' New Movie 'Unfrosted' Stars A Famous Comedian

If you're looking for an easy breakfast, you might reach for a package of Pop-Tarts. Sure, you can pop them in the toaster and heat them up, but they also taste pretty good at room temperature. And the choices! According to Serious Eats, Pop-Tarts come in more than 20 varieties, from peanut butter and jelly to the original unfrosted.

Unfrosted Pop-Tarts entered the world in 1964, shortly followed by frosted Pop-Tarts (via Snack History). Today, the unfrosted variety comes in strawberry, blueberry, and brown sugar cinnamon — and mango, chocolate chip, and cinnamon roll options sit on the edge with only a drizzle of icing.

Although many people might opt for the frosted varieties, like cherry, hot fudge, and s'mores flavors, there must be something special about the original unfrosted for it to have lasted this long. Is it the thicker crust? The pure simplicity of its appearance? Maybe the up-and-coming Pop-Tarts movie will satisfy our curiosity and explain all.

The Pop-Tarts movie was inspired by Jerry Seinfeld

Believe it or not, comedian Jerry Seinfeld is the mastermind behind the "Unfrosted'"Pop-Tarts movie. According to Deadline, the movie is "inspired by a joke he told on the stand-up stage about the world-shaking invention of Pop-Tarts."

In a YouTube clip of a 2010 performance, Seinfeld describes the treat as "fruit-filled frosted rectangles in a box" and "in packets lined in some sort of metallic alloy from NASA." He goes on to explain why Pop-Tarts come two-to-a-packet and why the packets themselves are so reflective. Very serious stuff.

All jokes aside, Seinfeld is working on the movie with Barry Marder and Spike Feresten — and for the record, these three co-wrote the 2007 "Bee Movie." Make of that what you will. "Unfrosted" will premiere on Netflix, says The Takeout, but the release date has yet to be announced. Regardless, we're all excited to uncover the truth once and for all.
