  • Valerie is a longtime writer and editor who loves taking a jumble of words and making them sing.
  • She is the co-author of the Wilderness Ranger Cookbook, which offers recipes for eating well in the backcountry.
  • Among her top strengths are learning and researching, so for her, the best articles are the ones that allow her to discover something she didn't already know.

Valerie has been a lifelong journalist, having worked in some capacity with a newspaper since she was 16. Her coverage has focused on local news, which ranged from government finance to education policies to health news and people features. She spent more than 18 years as a reporter and editor at The Dallas Morning News in Texas and recently spent three and a half years as a managing editor in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro office of Community Impact, which focuses on hyperlocal news of the communities it serves.

Valerie received a bachelor's degree in English/communications from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, and went on to earn her master's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Both degrees helped prepare her for a career in journalism.
