What Are Salted Egg Yolk Potato Chips And What Do They Taste Like?

One of the best parts about traveling is getting to sample all the delicious snack foods that are popular in other countries. This naturally includes potato chips, which can be found in a variety of unique flavors around the globe. As more grocery stores start carrying international delights on their shelves, you may not even have to travel very far to expand your horizons.

One interesting flavor of potato chip has recently arrived in American stores straight from Singapore, and it just might be the next big thing in the snack food aisle. South Asian chip company Irvins entered the United States market back in 2020 and has been converting American palates to the savory, umami goodness that's popular in Asian snacks ever since.

Since releasing its ultra-popular Salted Egg potato chips onto the American market, the brand has been the talk of the town on the internet, even catching the attention of rapper Cardi B (via Yahoo!).

Salted egg chips reportedly have a bold flavor

These potato chips aren't just flavored like salted egg yolk, they actually contain them. Irvins Salted Egg chips use real duck egg yolks that have been brined for 30 days, then ground into a powdery mixture, per Irvins. The resulting salty powder is combined with other ingredients, including chilli padi and curry leaves, and cooked onto thinly-sliced chips.

What does this unique flavor taste like? According to Reddit user keemacurry, the chips taste "super rich, like egg yolks. Salty and a bit sweet." Irvins says that the brand's iconic chips have a "bold flavor with a light crunch", which sounds like the perfect makeup for a chip.

The chips have become so popular that Irvins has even teamed up with popular ramen brand Nissin to produce their own salted egg-flavored instant noodles. While the ramen unfortunately isn't available in the U.S., it probably won't be long until it arrives on a grocery store shelf near you, given Irvin's unprecedented success.
