People Think These Classic Chips Are Even Better Than Doritos

Whether it's Friday night in and you're craving something salty and crunchy to pair with your Netflix marathon, or it's a Tuesday afternoon and you need something to get through the afternoon slump, chips are one of Americans' favorite snacks. Anyone who's ever braved the chip aisle at the grocery store knows that there are seemingly hundreds of flavors, brands, and styles to choose from. There are Doritos, with their nacho cheese goodness. There are Fritos, with corn chips made for dunking in queso. There are Lay's, with everything from sour cream and onion to salt and vinegar. There are Pringles, with their recognizable cans.

But of all the options, which one is the most popular? Mashed surveyed over 44,000 people worldwide via a YouTube poll to find out what the number one go-to chip is. Between Doritos, potato chips, Cheetos, and "Other," there was one that won close to half the votes. Spoiler alert: It wasn't Doritos.

Potato chips are people's top choice

The old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" seems to apply to the world of chips. Meaning despite all the different and new types of chips out there, people seem to prefer the classics — always returning to what they know and love. This was evident in the recent survey Mashed conducted, which found that 43 percent of respondents dubbed potato chips their favorite, making it the clear winner. As for which flavor is best? According to a Statista survey, plain is by far the most popular, with 191.2 million Americans indulging in the salty snack in 2020 (barbecue and sour cream and onion were the runners-up).

While potato chips were by far the go-to chip, how did the others fare? Doritos came in second with 32 percent of the votes, followed by Cheetos with 16 percent. The "Other" category received just 10 percent of the votes, and included write-ins like Fritos, Bugles, tortilla chips, and Sun Chips.
