This Original Skittles Flavor Is Making A Big Comeback
Sometimes, when you wish very, very hard, you get what you want. In this case, it's the return of a Skittles fan-favorite. Yes, the old-school lime Skittle is coming back!
In a bit of quid pro quo, Skittles took to social media to ask fans for a little favor: If the brand won @TwitterMktg's "Best Brand On Twitter" poll, they would bring back the citrusy flavor. Turns out, the brand lost. To Xbox. Welp.
But if social media has taught us anything, it's that fans can be persistent. And so it was Skittle fans, who began to beg and plead for the brand to bring the lime flavor back, that got the job done.
The candy company could not resist playing a little cat and mouse game in the lead-up to the announcement by following social media accounts that had the word "lime" in them. The suspense worked because, not only is lime coming back, it's coming back in a single-flavor bag: soon you will be able to nosh on JUST lime Skittles.
When will lime Skittles be available?
"Our Skittles fans asked, and we are thrilled to deliver," a Skittles rep said in a press release (via Best Products). "Lime-loving Skittles fans have been very vocal with their pleas to bring back their favorite flavor and we're excited to be able to offer them all the lime Skittles they want with the release of our All Lime packs."
According to Taste of Home, Skittles' original cast of flavors — orange, lemon, lime, grape and strawberry — was introduced in 1974, but lime was inexplicably swapped for green apple in 2013. Lime made a brief comeback in 2017, but the limited edition packs were a mere blip on the radar, which explains why diehard fans are determined to ride this wave of nostalgia as long as possible.
A happy fan posted unwavering and enthusiastic support for the lime-only bag on the brand's Facebook announcement about the special release. "I'm going to buy a million of these and savor every single one."
Check your local store's shelves at the end of June or beginning of July for the limited-edition lime Skittles. Almost any place where you buy candy should be able to provide you with the citrus goodies. It's unknown how long the limited edition packs will be available, so if you see 'em, grab 'em.
