The Reason Chipotle Can't Serve Quesadillas To Everyone

Mainly known for bowls and burritos, Chipotle's simple-build-your-own menu is bigger in flavor than it is options. Chipotle's deceptively minimalist menu hides a few hidden gems like the quesadilla and a few other secret menu items that are must-tries.

The quesadilla is a standard melted cheese concoction with a Monterrey jack cheese base. Choose a protein from already on-the-menu options like chicken, steak, barbacoa, carnitas, and sofritas. The cheese and meat (or veggie) quesadillas are served on a tray that has space for three sides. Perfect for dipping, choose from sour cream, guacamole (at an added cost), salsas, and even rice or beans (via Chipotle). A review from one of the lucky customers who had gotten to try the quesadilla was posted on Cleveland. They were impressed with the quesadilla's looks, saying it passed the "Instagram versus reality test." The simplicity of the quesadilla ended up working in its favor as "the Hand-Crafted Quesadilla is essentially Chipotle's version of a grilled cheese sandwich. I can't think of any better compliment than that." However delicious Chipotle's quesadilla is, it does not guarantee that you'll be able to get your hands on one.

Quesadillas are on the (online) menu

A limited edition item, Chipotle doesn't just give out quesadillas to everyone who wants one. Meant for online orders, customers who ask for a quesadilla in-store are not guaranteed one. A former Chipotle employee revealed to Mental Floss that in training, employees are not told to serve a quesadilla to every customer and instead are encouraged to tell customers, "'it's a digital item only, but we'll make it for you this time.'"

Another secret menu item that's even harder to find, the Quesarito, is time-consuming and potentially dangerous to make with all the hot cheese, making the quesadilla/burrito hybrid an even rarer menu find. According to this previous employee, Chipotle discourages their workers from making more time-consuming items, and instead focuses on the quicker-to-put-together bowls and burritos. While there's no guarantee that you'll be able to order one in person if you're really craving a gooey quesadilla, place an online order and Chipotle employees will make a quesadilla for you.
