Ina Garten's Mother's Day Breakfast Sandwich Is Easy Enough For Kids To Make

What better way to kick off celebrating the special mom in your life than with an extra special breakfast? If you're thinking of taking your mom out for the festivities, keep in mind that Mother's Day is the busiest day of the year for dining out (via Specialty Food Association). Unless you've made your reservations well in advance, it may be best to avoid the restaurant scene — even more so this year because of the labor shortage that many establishments are currently facing (via Eater).

Instead, why not surprise mom with a delicious morning spread made with love by you and the kids? There are plenty of options for an at-home breakfast or brunch from omelets to French toast or even a hearty plate of chicken and waffles, though these dishes may be difficult for children to help out with, and can also lead to a major mess in the kitchen that nobody wants to deal with after your meal. Fortunately, Ina Garten has an answer for the perfect Mother's Day breakfast: her bacon, egg, and cheddar sandwich from her latest cookbook "Modern Comfort Food," which she described on Instagram as a simple dish that is "mostly made in the microwave so the kids can help, too!"

Treat Mom to Ina Garten's bacon, egg, and cheddar sandwich this Mother's Day

Ina Garten suggests whipping up her bacon, egg, and cheddar sandwich for mom this Mother's Day. Per her website, the dish calls for a short list of ingredients: English muffins, applewood-smoked bacon, extra-large eggs, grated sharp white cheddar cheese, Hass avocados, olive oil, whole milk, kosher salt, and black pepper.

Start by cooking the bacon in a pan. Once it's at the desired level of crispiness (Garten suggests five to seven minutes), place it on a paper towel-lined plate and set aside until you're ready to put the sandwich together. Meanwhile, the kids can beat together eggs, milk, salt, and pepper and pour the mixture into a microwavable bowl that has been brushed with olive oil. Cook the eggs in the microwave in 30-second intervals, gently stirring with a fork in between until they are "puffed and almost cooked through." Add in the shredded cheddar cheese and microwave one more time for 30 seconds. You can slice up your avocado and toast the English muffins while doing this as well.

Assembling the sandwich is just as easy for the kids to do. Start by placing the sliced avocado on the bottom half of the English muffin, followed by a sprinkle of salt and pepper and then the bacon. Next, add the eggs "cheese side up" and top with any remaining cheese followed by another sprinkling of salt and pepper. Finally, close the sandwich with the top half of the English muffin and deliver it to Mom to enjoy!
