The Unusual Banana Topping That's Gained A Cult Following

Move over, watermelon with mustard! A new challenger has entered the ring, and it's quickly gaining a cult following.

Strange food combinations are nothing new. In fact, there's a whole world of wacky and weird foods out there that people love to eat, such as the infamous peanut butter and pickle sandwich or Nutella on hard-boiled eggs, as well as surprising delights like onion chocolate chip cookies. (We won't even touch the incredibly controversial discussion surrounding pineapple on pizza.)

Certain versatile ingredients were born to pair with others. Bananas, for example, are often eaten in breakfast dishes like smoothies or oatmeal, or they can be further dressed up with a dip in chocolate and sprinkling of nuts or even flambéed with rum and served as an old-school dessert. Inevitably, though, one of the banana's more unusual pairings has recently resurfaced on the internet, and it's gained a bit of a cult following thanks to one man: Mr. Rogers.

This combination is bananas

In a 1982 episode of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," Mr. Rogers took the advice of a young viewer and tried the strange combination of a slice of American cheese wrapped around a banana. The clip shows Mr. Rogers taking a bite of the snack and giving it his seal of approval, saying, "Mmm, that's very good."

The video resurfaced online recently, and people have been debating the merits of this unusual food duo ever since. While some people are on board with the idea of eating a banana with cheese, others are quite grossed out by it. "I am reporting this as a crime," wrote one Reddit user, while another showed their distaste for the snack by referring to it as "banana and plastic cheese." Nevertheless, some people consider the snack to be an utter delicacy, especially when served on sushi rice. One Redditor posted a photo of their "banana and American cheese nigiri," on which one pleased viewer commented, "Everything from the ingredients to the presentation couldn't be more perfect."

If you're feeling adventurous and want to try this unique snack for yourself, it's actually very easy to make. Simply take one slice of American cheese and wrap it around a peeled banana. That's it! You can eat it as is, or throw it in the microwave for 15 seconds to slightly melt the cheese. You might just be surprised by how much you like (or despite) it.
