Dunkin' Donuts Sells About 60 Cups Of Coffee Per Second

According to a 2020 survey conducted by the National Coffee Association, 62% of Americans drink coffee on a daily basis, consuming, on average, three cups a day. While that doesn't at all seem like too wild of a number for an individual coffee drinker, the numbers become a biut more eye-opening when we look at the entire U.S. or even the globe as a whole.

After you factor in all the different ways people consume coffee around the world, it's not so hard to believe that the coffee industry is worth around $433.6 billion (via Statistica). Just think about it — you have people who make coffee at home. You have people who pick up a coffee from McDonald's on their way to work. You have people who spend the afternoon at Starbucks or Dunkin'.

Coffee chains like Starbucks and Dunkin' make up a huge chunk of the coffee market, as you might expect, but it can still be difficult to wrap your mind around the actual numbers. Dunkin' alone, per Home Grounds, pulled in more than $1.37 billion in sales in 2020.

More facts about Dunkin' coffee sales

Considering Dunkin's annual revenue of more than $1 billion, the chain has to be selling a crazy amount of coffee, right? Well, yes. According to the Dunkin' Newsroom, Dunkin' sells about 60 cups every second. That's 3,600 cups a minute, or 216,000 cups an hour, or nearly 5.2 million cups a day. For kicks and giggles, that's almost 1.9 billion cups a year.

Per CNBC, coffee and other beverages make up approximately 60% of Dunkin' sales, with the remainder made up by — of course — the donuts. Even so, Dunkin' still sells more than 2.9 billion donuts each year (via Eat This, Not That). How wild is that?

To be fair, the chain was originally named Dunkin' Donuts for a reason — that reason being the donuts. Dunkin' dropped the second half of its name to reflect the growing popularity of its coffee options. Given its sales today, the name change seems to have been a good decision.
