The World's Largest Lasagna Was Over 80 Feet Long

The Guinness Book of Records has been around since the 1950s and was created by Sir Hugh Beaver as a way of "settling pub arguments," per Guinness World Records. There have been at least 150 million copies of The Guinness Book of Records sold around the world, with 1.8 million being sold in 2021 alone. The Guinness Book of Records has been simplified to Guinness World Records, and they stay busy, approving around 6,000 record applications in 2021.

As you can imagine, there are a lot of Guinness World Records given to food-related accomplishments. For example, there's the world's longest noodle that measured 3,084 meters (10,119 feet) long (via Guinness World Records), and the most expensive hot dog sold commercially was priced at $169, per Guinness World Records. There's most likely a record for any food that you can think of.

There's even a record for the world's largest lasagna, and it's a lot bigger than you'd expect.

It weighed about 10,725 pounds

According to Guinness World Records, the world's biggest lasagna was made in Wieliczka, Poland by Makro Supermarket and Magillo Restaurant on June 20, 2012. The world's largest lasagna didn't happen randomly. Magillo Restaurant and Makro Supermarket were inspired by the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, which was happening in Poland at that time. The team from Italy was staying in Krakow, Poland, and Makro and Magillo wanted to honor the sports team by making them a traditional Italian dish with a huge twist, per Magillo Restaurant. An estimated 5,000 people watched the lasagna get made, which took more than 10 hours to create.

Weighing 4,865 kilograms (10,725 pounds and 7 ounces), the world's biggest lasagna was made with 2,500 kilograms of pasta, 800 kilograms of minced meat, 500 liters of white sauce and tomato sauce, 400 kilograms of mozzarella cheese, 100 kilograms of carrots and peas, and various spices. Guinness World Records has the dimensions of the largest lasagna as 25 meters long by 2.5 meters wide (82 feet long by 8 feet and 2 inches wide); however, Magillo Restaurant documents the largest lasagna as measuring 26 meters long by 5.5 meters wide (85.30 feet long by 18.04 feet wide). The lasagna had to be baked in sections (via Time) and was cut into 10,000 pieces to serve everyone that watched the whole process.
