How do you know that a burger has reached a certain level of popularity? When it has its own fan page, that's how. The burger we're talking about here is none other than the patty melt from Texas' native son — Whataburger. While Whataburger has a number of beloved burgers, from the classic single patty Whataburger to the edgier jalapeño and cheese Whataburger, it's the patty melt that has a special place in the hearts of so many. It's also worth noting that most burgers don't inspire wedding cakes in their honor, either.

A quick glance at the Whataburger menu shows that the patty melt consists of Texas toast, two beef patties, two slices of Monterrey jack cheese, grilled onions, and creamy pepper sauce, but obviously, there must be more to the magic. 

The burger was a hit right from the start when it made its debut in 2008, and while it was initially a limited-time option, it's now a permanent staple (via QSR). The beef patties that go on the patty melt are never frozen and the sandwich is freshly made to order each and every time, according to Restaurant News. The creamy pepper sauce made with a "unique blend of peppers and spices" sets the Whataburger patty melt apart from others and undoubtedly helps give it that "craveable" factor the burger chain's vice president of innovation, Rich Scheffler said is so important (via Bon Appétit). 

As for how exactly Whataburger makes its patty melt, they seem to be somewhat secretive about it. Probably because it's "by far one of our most popular" items according to Scheffler (via The National Provisioner). A food review though from YouTuber Daym Drops does seem to note that it's the patty melt's "grilled cheese" factor of the Texas toast combined with the beef patty and sauce's "spicy kick" that make it a standout.
