Actor, author, and "Iron Chef" remake host William Shatner has led one of the most colorful lives ever documented and still manages to catch the public's attention well into his 90s. In January 2026, Shatner made waves after he was spotted having breakfast while driving. It wasn't just the fact that he was eating behind the wheel that got people talking, however, but his odd choice of food: a full bowl of cereal.
TMZ posted a story with pictures obtained from the strange scene, showing Shatner taking a spoonful of what looked to be Raisin Bran from a white bowl and putting it in his mouth. He appeared to have had the bowl resting on his lap at first, casually picking it up for a quick bite at a stoplight. When the light turned green, he went on his merry way like it was just another day.
The sheer randomness of it all created quite a bit of buzz online. Reddit users took the opportunity to make a few good-natured jokes about the situation while also remarking on how healthy the actor looked for his age. Based on Mashed's ranking of the most popular cereals, however, Shatner probably could have made a better choice for his breakfast; Raisin Bran was rated in the middle of the pack, placing 7th out of 16 cereals.
William Shatner's breakfast turned out to be a publicity stunt
It wasn't long before William Shatner himself unveiled the real story behind his viral moment. Just a few days after TMZ broke the story, the actor revealed on Instagram that it was all an elaborate stunt he was pulling with Raisin Bran. In a video capitoned, "Why I was eating cereal in the car," Shatner spoke about the importance of fiber in a healthy diet, claiming that Kellogg's cereal was a good source of it. The video also had the hashtag #KelloggsPartner appear at the top to confirm this was indeed a paid promotion.
Creative agency VaynerMedia revealed the staged paparazzi moment was also essentially the soft-launch of its hilarious "Will Shat" Super Bowl LX ad. In it, Shatner teleports (or beams?) to multiple locations, helping people get their fiber fix, all while dumping a few bowel movement-related puns along the way.
It was a fun idea, but with one flaw: Eating cereal while driving isn't the safest. There's a reason why grab-and-go breakfast sandwiches reign supreme on morning drives — you only need one hand to eat them, allowing you to stay relatively safe and keep the other hand on the wheel. That's not exactly something you can do with cereal, unless you use special tools like the CrunchCup, which lets you eat cereal one-handed by drinking it from a cup. Maybe next time, Raisin Bran and Shatner can expand their partnership to include that product.
