This Viral Fruit Gushers Hack Changes Everything

Opening up your lunch as a kid and seeing gooey Fruit Gushers was one of the best surprises. There's nothing quite like biting into the fruity snack and having a flavor explosion in your mouth. However, if you left Fruit Gushers behind in your childhood — much like that stuffed animal you took everywhere — you might want to reconsider. According to PopSugar, it's become popular to add chili powder to the juicy treat and creating something new called "dulces enchilados."

To make this sweet and spicy snack all you need are Fruit Gushers, powdered sugar, chamoy sauce, and your favorite choice of Mexican spices. The most popular choice among spice seekers is Tajín, which you've probably already enjoyed on the rim of a michelada. Chamoy is a sauce from Mexico that includes a mix of lime juice, chile peppers, and fruit. The condiment also appears to have a cult following among some popular restaurants in the U.S.

Why these spices have a big following and how to make dulces enchilados

Chef Barbara Sibley of La Palapa in New York said as a kid she fondly remembers eating chamoy growing up in Mexico City. "I would just eat it straight up, till my teeth felt like they were going to fall out," she told Eater. "It was something that I really, really missed when I came to New York."

Luckily for us, this nostalgia is inspiring more chefs like Sibley to use chamoy in unexpected ways. Chef Daniel Bojorquez of La Brasa in Massachusetts also loves the tangy sauce. "If you are Mexican, you have had chamoy at some point in your life," Bojorquez explained to Eater. "It's like peanut butter in the U.S."

Now you might be asking yourself, how do I create this flavorful concoction? In order to bring chamoy and the other flavors together to create dulces enchilados, you combine 5 tablespoons of powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons of chamoy. Then you coat the Fruit Gushers with the mixture and add as much spice as you like. Some like things very hot, so they'll want to add more seasoning.

Now you're ready to reminisce about your childhood while trying a new twist on this delicious treat.
