The Swedish Twist That Makes A McDonald's Egg McMuffin Much More Filling
McDonald's Egg McMuffin helped bring the fast food model to mornings. Its familiar ingredients, which include real eggs, balance savory and salty flavors and different textures. While this iconic breakfast sandwich has stood the test of time, that doesn't mean it can't be tweaked. In Sweden, for example, the chain offers a Mighty McMuffin with an extra meat twist that creates a much more filling item.
The sandwich still has the traditional round egg, cheese, and toasted English muffin, but it swaps Canadian bacon for both a sausage patty and American-style strip bacon. It also uses processed cheddar cheese instead of American, and includes ketchup and a popular Swedish spread called bregott instead of traditional butter. Bregott is a mixture of butter, rapeseed oil, water, and salt that was created in the late 1960s. It was designed to be spreadable when it comes out of the refrigerator and has a somewhat nutty flavor.
The extra breakfast meat shows up in the nutritional data. The Mighty McMuffin has 493 calories versus the Egg McMuffin's 310. The Swedish sandwich also has 29 grams of protein, 27 grams of fat, and 32 grams of carbs. Meanwhile, its U.S. counterpart provides 17 grams of protein, 13 grams of fat, and 30 grams of carbs. Not only is the mighty item meatier and more calorie-dense, but it might also be tastier for some McMuffin fans. A Redditor praised it as the "best of both worlds of sausage & bacon mcmuffins rolled into one, actually so tasty." However, another Reddit poster suggested the chain should have gone further: "Missed opportunity to throw on the Canadian bacon and make it an 'every meat' type of deal."
The Mighty McMuffin isn't unique to just Sweden
Sweden isn't the only country where the sandwich is sold. It's also available in Canada and Australia, but the three have some differences. While the Scandinavian version has ketchup and bregott, Canada's just has butter. McDonald's locations in the Great White North also offer Mighty McGriddles, which are the same thing but with maple-flavored griddle cakes instead of an English muffin.
Australia's Mighty McMuffin, by contrast, contains ketchup and spray-on canola oil, and the sausage is made of beef. The Land Down Under additionally has a Deluxe Mighty McMuffin, which comes with tomato, lettuce, and McChicken sauce.
It's easy enough to create a Mighty sandwich in countries like the U.S. where it's not available. Just order a Sausage McMuffin with Egg and add regular bacon, which you can also do via the app or the store's ordering kiosks. At the same Queens location, you can get either two half-strips or four half-strips.
