What You Didn't Know About Pizza Hut's Perfume Line

Pizza Hut is the go-to spot for late night munchies, kid's birthday parties, and...perfume? At least, that was the case for a brief time in early 2013, when Pizza Hut launched its limited edition Eau de Pizza Hut in the United States, just in time for Valentine's Day.

The perfume actually launched over the border in 2012, when a joke posted on Pizza Hut Canada's Facebook page asked fans: "Do you love the smell of a box of Pizza Hut pizza being opened? We thought so. If that smell was a perfume, what would it be called?" Over 10,000 fans responded to the social media posting, which prompted the chain's advertising company, Grip Limited, to decide it was time to bring the scent to life.

A short time later, the pizza chain announced on Facebook that the first 100 people who replied to its post would receive their own bottle of the exclusive scent. The response was overwhelming, with over 1,000 people replying within the first hour, but Pizza Hut delivered on its promise. According to The Globe and Mail, 100 lucky Canadians received their bottles of Pizza Hut perfume in December of 2012.

Pizza Hut's perfume was part of a Valentine's Day promo package

However, the U.S. also wanted to get in on the action. By early 2013, word of the pizza-themed scent had gotten around, and American consumers didn't want to let Canadians have all the fun. So Pizza Hut decided to introduce a limited Valentine's Day promo in America, too. According to HuffPost, American Twitter users who tweeted a message with the hashtag #LastMinuteLovers to @PizzaHut, from February 11th to February 13th, would be eligible to receive a Last Minute Lovers Package.

The package included the sought-after bottle of perfume, as well as a $20 gift card for Big Pizza Sliders or Lovers Pizza. The company only released 24 packages per day over the three day promotional period.

In total, just 72 bottles of perfume were delivered in the states. Surprisingly, the perfume reportedly smelled nothing like pizza. According to the lucky few who were able to sample it in person, the perfume actually had the unexpected but pleasing aroma of warm cinnamon rolls, per HuffPost.
