This Popular Sandwich Chain May Soon Start Accepting Bitcoin

The future is here, and Quiznos is leading the way. The popular sandwich chain is partnering with the digital asset marketplace Bakkt to enable customers to begin paying for their orders using the digical currency bitcoin (per Nasdaq). The company has just announced that beginning in mid-August, Quiznos will be launching a pilot program that allows customers to download the Bakkt app and use it to complete their purchases with bitcoin at participating locations. The bitcoin payment will function exactly like cash, with customers able to pay for meals, gift cards, and receive loyalty and rewards points while using the app.

"Partnering with an innovative platform such as Bakkt is appealing to us for a number of reasons, primarily because it allows us to accept bitcoin directly at the point of sale as part of a quick and seamless transaction," said Mark Lohmann, President of REGO Restaurant Group, which owns Quiznos (via Business Wire). He added, "As we continue our digital transformation journey and respond to mobile and millennial consumer demand for alternative and cryptocurrency payment options, we are excited to offer yet another accessible way for customers to buy a meal, in this case, through the Bakkt digital asset wallet."

Quiznos customers who pay with Bitcoin will receive a $15 Bitcoin credit

The new bitcoin payment option will have a limited rollout in select Denver Quiznos locations, which will include the Quiznos restaurants inside the busy Denver airport, per Nasdaq. To incentivize customers to embrace the high-tech new move, Bakkt and Quiznos will be offering a $15 bitcoin credit to all users who download the Bakkt app and use bitcoin to pay for their meal at select Quiznos locations.

"This is an exciting tentpole moment for us as we connect the next generation of customer experiences to the digital economy. Through this partnership, we are introducing unique experiences to Quiznos customers by enabling them to take advantage of new ways to interact with digital assets and bringing bitcoin utility to the mainstream consumer market. We will closely watch how this pilot performs, with the potential to expand the partnership to additional Quiznos locations across the country," explained Sheela Zemlin, Chief Revenue Officer at Bakkt (via Business Wire).
