The Surprising Kitchen Item Martha Stewart Doesn't Own

After decades in the public eye, Martha Stewart still manages to find ways to surprise her fans. There was, of course, the time when she not only did time in a federal prison for insider trading but managed to thrive while inside (via People). Then there has been her partnership with hip-hop marijuana aficionado Snoop Dogg, which has resulted in many hours of infectiously funny television programming, including the 2021 Halloween-related installment, Snoop And Martha's Very Tasty Halloween. She surprised us with her stance on nonstick cookware — she doesn't have a problem with it, as long as it's PFOA-free (via the Martha Stewart website). She even sells a line of it herself. Now, Stewart has surprised us yet again in an ever-so-slightly salty chat she had with Jimmy Fallon on his late-night talk show that covered a lot of ground, including pickling, that naughty nurse costume that she apparently wore one time, and the high price that the photo of Stewart in said costume fetched when it was sold, not to mention a "Shark Tank"-like sequence in which she scoffed at every idea Fallon brought to her.

That, of course, brings us to the most surprising thing she revealed in that chat. Not only is there a common item that she doesn't own; moreover, it's something she flat-out refuses to own.

Martha Stewart reserves her mugs for the camera

When Martha Stewart was a guest on Jimmy Fallon's late-night show this week, it was like manna from heaven for Stewart fans who hang on her every word, waiting for the inevitable yet somehow unexpected revelation — wrapped beautifully, of course, in a Stewart's own brand of elegant snark. Not only did she fill us in on the costume story, but she also revealed that she has some pretty strong opinions about Thanksgiving leftovers and the distinction between bread, on the one hand, and cookies on the other (via YouTube). The most surprising revelation, however, was her feelings about cups versus mugs.

When Fallon suggested to Stewart that what the world really needs is a coffee mug holder that keeps the contents well-stirred throughout the entire drinking experience, Martha shut him down — politely, of course — and solely on the basis of the fact that she doesn't like mugs. "I think mugs are sort of clumsy and ugly. I don't own a mug in my house," she explained. So what does she drink her coffee out of? "I have beautiful cups," she clarified.

Then what of the "Tonight Show" mugs that Jimmy Fallon always makes sure that she gets as a thank-you for appearing on his show? "I give them away," Stewart confessed.
