Whatever Happened To Banana Nut Cheerios?

When it comes to breakfast cereals, Cheerios is a staple. It's hard to go wrong with the healthy O's, given that they are both tasty and good for your heart. According to Everyday Health, Cheerios are high in fiber and low in sugar, making them a great option to start the day. Plus, they're only 100 calories per serving. Plenty of Cheerios varieties also help lower cholesterol, which is advertised on the front of the box.

Still, the plain old Cheerios don't always do it for everyone. That's why Cheerios' parent company, General Mills, has created a variety of cereal flavors throughout the years. Arguably the most well-known of these is Honey Nut Cheerios, whose commercials feature the adorable honey bee. Cheerios' website lists 20 different flavors, but there is one flavor you won't find on store shelves anymore. That flavor is banana nut, though it was once available for purchase. What happened?

Banana Nut Cheerios was discontinued in 2015

Those who favored the banana nut variety over Cheerios' other flavors might be disappointed to learn that those fruity O's are no longer made. Back in 2016, one Twitter user tweeted at Cheerios, trying to get to the bottom of why they couldn't find the banana nut cereal on any of their local supermarket shelves. Cheerios responded to confirm the discontinuation. "Unfortunately, Banana Nut Cheerios have been discontinued :( So sorry for any inconvenience!" the brand wrote.

Cheerios did not offer an explanation as to why or when they discontinued their product within the tweet. The flavor was initially launched in 2009, per Delish, but was discontinued in 2015. Though the variety made a small reappearance in 2017, it didn't last long on store shelves. According to HuffPost, stores tend to cut ties with certain brands and products that are "slow-moving" or don't sell well. It could explain Cheerios' reasoning for discontinuing their banana nut flavor, though we may never know for sure.
