Smoothie Açaí Bowl Recipe

This smoothie açaí bowl recipe is not only nutritious and delicious, but free of gluten and any added sugar. According to food blogger Ksenia Prints of At the Immigrant's Table, most commercial açaí bowls contain added sugar, or unnecessary ingredients. In this recipe, we add pineapple, mango, and banana to achieve that sweet flavor. We also use coconut water instead of sweetened milk, and whole Greek yogurt and flax seeds to add protein.

At the heart of the açaí bowl, lies the açaí berry. This unique superfood has been around for centuries, eaten by the dwellers of the Amazonian region across South America, especially Brazil. They weren't served frozen until the 1990s, and usually not in smoothie bowls — that's a mostly Westernized invention, albeit a delicious one (via Eater).

Gather the ingredients for smoothie açaí bowl

To make this smoothie açaí bowl, you will need frozen blueberries, frozen mango chunks, frozen pineapple chunks, frozen açaí pieces, flax seeds, coconut water, unsweetened Greek yogurt, banana, and shredded unsweetened coconut.

Make the açaí bowl purée

Add 1 cup of blueberries, 1 cup of mango, 1 cup of pineapple, açaí pieces, 2 tablespoons flax seeds, coconut water, yogurt, and 2 bananas to a high-powered blender. Blend until fully combined into a smooth, thick mixture.

Transfer the smoothie to a bowl

Transfer the smoothie contents to a bowl. If the smoothie isn't icy or spoonable enough for you, add a few ice cubes to the smoothie mixture, and blend.

Garnish, and serve the smoothie açaí bowl

Top with remaining blueberries, mango, and pineapple chunks, as well as the remaining flax seeds, remaining banana, and shredded coconut. You can make a design, or just pile everything on top to create an artless mess — it's going to be delicious either way. Serve the smoothie açaí bowl immediately. If there's any smoothie leftover, you can keep it in a jar in your fridge for a day, though it will darken, and become less icy.
