Alison Roman Defends Induction Burners On Twitter

Time to move aside, air fryers, we might have a new appliance taking over the world one kitchen at a time.

When Bloomberg reported that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) might be imposing a ban on gas stoves to avoid diseases triggered by indoor air pollution like asthma, it sent the public into a frenzy. The Chair of the CPSC later clarified in a tweet that there will be no gas bans, but the whole situation had us wondering what the best alternative to gas stoves could be.

Europeans had it figured out way before we even conceived the thought. A Business Wire report from 2017 shows that a rising number of Europeans were using induction cooktops and identified it as one of the key trends in the kitchen ranges market. Forbes suggests that induction cooktops are more energy-efficient, cheaper, and safer than gas cooktop units.

Amid the chaos that ensued following the "gas ban" report, food writer Alison Roman tweeted that she is a proud owner of an induction stove and welcomed any questions that curious pwople might have.

Alison Roman is an induction girl through and through

"I have an induction stove by choice AMA," Alison Roman tweeted on January 12, 2023. In no time, netizens replied with a bunch of questions about induction burners, and she was happy to answer.

"How do you accommodate for times — cooking rice for example — when you need to take water from a boil immediately to a simmer," one user asked. Roman suggested reducing the heat as one would do in a gas cooktop. Several users wanted to know how to warm tortillas, and Roman suggested using a cast iron or the oven for that. A fan asked why Roman uses a gas stove in her cooking videos if she preferred inductions so much. "[Because] we film in my apartment (rental) in Brooklyn," she replied.

One reservation Twitter users seem to have when it comes to using induction stoves is that you cannot use a normal wok on it. Your regular cookware might not be compatible with an induction unless they are magnetic-based or cast iron, per Metro Kitchen. Roman revealed she doesn't use a wok for cooking, so it hasn't been an issue for her.

As long as you have a consistent electric power supply and you don't mind buying special pots and pans, induction stovetops can be a good investment, per Forbes.
