TikTok Thinks Walmart's 2-Pack Sugar Cookies Spell Recession

Getting food on the table has been more difficult than ever in the last few years, between food shortages and the food inflation crisis. The cost of some essentials has spiked more than others, per NBC Chicago, with eggs increasing in price by 39.8% in 2022, and margarine by 38.3%.

Unfortunately, 2023 might not be much better. According to NPR, many experts believe a recession could roll in by the end of the year, but many also say it will be "relatively mild and short," given the current strength of the job market. Either way, no one can say for sure what's going to happen.

On a lighter note, however, many TikTokers have been pointing out what they consider signs of an impending recession, and we can't deny that some of these so-called signs are kind of funny. There's just no way that the popular Lofthouse frosted sugar cookies know more about the nation's economic future than the experts, right?

What Walmart cookies have to do with the economy

At the end of January, one TikTok user jokingly shared how they "know for sure we are in a recession now." Their proof? Lofthouse cookies at Walmart, packaged in pairs, as opposed to the usual 10. A sale sign in the background also notes that the packages are "2 for $3."

As the Daily Dot points out, many people are taking this to mean that "even small luxuries" may soon be out of reach if they aren't already. Regardless, TikTokers experienced the full range of human emotions.

One person said, "Wait, I remember getting the two packs when I was a kid during the 2008 recession," while another wrote, "No, this is perfect, sometimes I only want two." Yet another person flew into a panic over the thought of "rationing" cookies. Still others rolled their eyes and said the smaller packages have been around for years.

Whatever happens, at least there's a TikTok or two that share a recipe for making your own Lofthouse cookies at home. No need to worry.
