The Hands-Down Worst Trader Joe's Breakfast Item From Our Taste Test

There's nothing worse than buying a new food product only to find out you don't like it. Even worse if you are trying to start your day with it. If you believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it should probably satisfy both your hunger and tastebuds. Luckily, we did some of the work for you, taste testing various breakfast items from Trader Joe's.

Trader Joe's Organic Corn Flakes Cereal ranked dead last in our ranking of 14 breakfast items from Trader Joe's. Our reviewer noted the cereal at least had the crunchy texture you'd expect from cornflakes, but that it didn't even taste like corn. In fact, it tasted more like the milk it was in. But mostly, "Trader Joe's Corn Flakes weren't even merely average, lacking flavor so thoroughly that eating them only ever felt like a chore," said our taste tester. That's a pretty scathing review for a traditional breakfast choice.

It makes sense, though, when you consider the corn choice and sugar content. Corn grits are made from field corn, resulting in a mild, relatively neutral base with very little corn flavor before other ingredients are added. And since the cornflakes are made with corn grits, they're naturally low in sugar, which means sweetness has to be added. Trader Joe's Organic Corn Flakes Cereal only has one gram of sugar, however. While that's great for anyone watching their sugar consumption, it's not great for making sure cornflakes don't taste bland.

Trader Joe's organic corn flakes cereal and what to do with it

If you do have a box of Trader Joe's Organic Corn Flakes Cereal sitting around and want to improve the taste, there are a few things you can do. According to Trader Joe's, aside from eating its cornflakes with milk, you can try adding some fruit, like sliced bananas or blueberries, or even coat French toast with the crushed cereal instead. There are actually a ton of recipes that use cornflakes, so at least you wouldn't be wasting food, and you just might enhance another dish, like secret breakfast macarons, cornflake muffins, or cornflake-topped hashbrown casserole.

There isn't a ton of discourse online around Trader Joe's Organic Corn Flakes Cereal, which likely means it's not one of the store's most popular offerings to begin with. In a Reddit post on the best cereal at Trader Joe's, cornflakes were never mentioned as anyone's favorite. The Flakes & Strawberries Cereal and Frosted Flakes Cereal made the cut, but not poor, tasteless Organic Corn Flakes Cereal.

Alternatively, if you like cornflakes, you may want to just go with the classic Kellogg's Corn Flakes, instead. It's the OG for a reason. Even at four grams of sugar per serving, it's still a low-sugar breakfast choice, and one that has a lot more flavor than TJ's version. Although it may be organic and contain less sugar, the Trader Joe's Organic Corn Flakes Cereal just doesn't measure up.
