Netflix Nabs One Of The '90s Most Beloved Game Shows

Is grocery shopping just another chore for you, or do you actually enjoy strolling through the aisles and checking out all the cool new products? Whether you love it or hate it, chances are you're not so thrilled when it comes time to check out and fork over a hefty amount to cover the cost. What if, however, you could race through the aisles, grabbing anything you like, and filling your cart for free?

You've just described the premise for Supermarket Sweep, a game show that first aired in the '60s and was then revived in the '90s. Contestants first answered trivia questions, competing to earn minutes. They'd then race around a grocery store set with their carts, using these minutes to collect as many high-dollar items as possible. The team whose haul rang up at the highest amount was declared the winner, so kind of the opposite of real life (or TLC's Extreme Couponing).

Does this sound like something you'd enjoy watching, whether for the vicarious thrills or the hilarious '90s hairstyles? Well, according to Today, Netflix is now streaming 15 episodes of this classic show.

You can watch Supermarket Sweep without Netflix, too

If you're not a Netflix subscriber, Today notes that Supermarket Sweep is also available on Amazon Prime — at least the 1990 and 2001 seasons. But what if you don't have either Netflix or Prime and don't feel like forking out one more monthly fee? Yeah, sometimes it does feel like all the different streaming services are combining to nickel-and-dime to death the poor cord-cutter.

Luckily, Supermarket Sweep is also available on PlutoTV, a streaming service that is all free, all the time. Sure, they have ads, but that just adds to the retro ambience, and Pluto's BUZZR channel (via Cord Cutters News) not only lets you watch Supermarket Sweep but also Super Password, Family Feud, Celebrity Name Game, Card Sharks, and Child's Play (the game show, not the movie series about Chucky).

If you choose to watch Supermarket Sweep on Pluto, you'll be in good company — WWE's Carmella is a fan, according to this tweet, though she switches back and forth between Supermarket Sweep and Pluto's The Hills channel. (You know, that show with Speidi — yeah, Pluto's got a channel devoted to that too, for all your guilty pleasure viewing needs).

There may be new Supermarket Sweep episodes coming soon

ABC Disney is actually planning what will be a third reboot for the game show, confirming to Today that Supermarket Sweep would be a part of next season's lineup. They were unable to confirm a specific premiere date, though, nor whether filming has been able to begin on schedule.

One thing we do know about the new Supermarket Sweep is who's going to be hosting it: Leslie Jones, formerly of Saturday Night Live. She's actually a huge fan of the show, saying, "I've always dreamed of being on 'Supermarket Sweep,'" and admitting she tried — but failed — to be chosen as a contestant on the show years ago. Undeterred, Jones said: "After getting turned away, I knew I'd have to take matters into my own hands. Being able to bring the iconic game show back to life on ABC is my ultimate redemption story!" We can't wait to watch the new show (not least to keep tabs on what groceries are currently the priciest), but in the meantime will be preparing by binge-watching everybody shopping like it's 1999.
