Yogurt is a great option when you need a quick, filling breakfast, snack, or sweet treat (some yogurts have a surprising amount of sugar in them) — and you're hardly strapped for choice when you head to the dairy section at the grocery store. There are tons of yogurt brands and flavors to choose from. In fact, according to Consumer Reports, the best yogurt is plain, whole-fat yogurt from Dannon.

The independent research organization has given Dannon Plain Whole Milk Yogurt its seal of approval, rating it the highest of the bunch — even above Fage and Chobani. C.R. experts gave the yogurt high marks for nutrition, texture, and taste, briefly noting, "[It] has full fat flavor with notes of sour cream." Each 32-ounce tub of Dannon offers five servings of plain yogurt, and it's not too hard to find in stores, either. You can grab it from places like Walmart, Target, and Giant.

Meanwhile, Chobani fell short, and Fage's various yogurts also scored lower, ultimately unable to beat whole-milk Dannon. The runner-up yogurts were, perhaps surprisingly, store brands: Trader Joe's Organic Plain Whole Milk Yogurt and Whole Foods' 365 Everyday Value Organic Plain Whole Milk Yogurt. Dannon's low-fat and non-fat offerings didn't rank as highly as its full-fat entry, but low-fat yogurt isn't as healthy as you think, as it can also be high in sugar.

Customers enjoy Dannon yogurt — and love making modifications

It's not just lab experts who enjoy Dannon Plain Whole Milk Yogurt. Customers also can't get enough of it, as outlined on its Walmart review page. "This is honestly the best tasting plain yogurt I've tried," wrote one fan, while another explained, "It tastes like melted ice cream. Smooth and mild." One parent even wrote, "This is the ONLY yogurt my kids will eat. The flavor and texture are perfect." A few also agreed with Consumer Reports about the yogurt being reminiscent of sour cream.

Now, if plain yogurt sounds a little boring to you, especially when there's a plethora of fun flavors out there like s'mores and lemon meringue, fair enough. But fans have plenty of recommendations for spicing up and serving this dairy treat. Customers make yogurt bowls with fruit (especially berries and bananas), granola, and a drizzle of sweeteners, like honey or even maple syrup. Some take a more savory route, adding herbs to the yogurt, using it with a packet of French onion soup dip mix, or substituting it for sour cream on top of a baked potato.

Plus, if you have recipes that call for plain yogurt — from lemon ricotta pancakes to chicken biryani — many noted that Dannon's whole milk option works well. And since recipes don't generally call for a whole tub of yogurt, you'll surely have leftovers that you can use to make a custom bowl, add to a smoothie, or use as a dip base.
