If you're getting a sandwich from one of the many fast food restaurants dotting the U.S. landscape, there's a good chance it will be a burger or chicken, or maybe even seafood, like McDonald's iconic Filet-o-Fish. When Shake Shack created one of the best fast food sandwiches of 2026, it turned to another protein instead. Despite having one of the best chain restaurant smash burgers, Shake Shack drew inspiration from barbecue and introduced a BBQ boneless baby back rib sandwich in late April 2026. It was a success.

The sandwich debuted as an addition to the limited-time Smoky BBQ menu Shake Shack brought back for the summer, joining the Smoky Classic BBQ burger and chicken sandwich. Its meat is 100% deboned baby back pork ribs (the best cut of ribs in our ranking) marinated in a barbecue spice blend with apple cider vinegar, and slow-cooked for nine hours. Shake Shack's chief communications officer Luke DeRouen told Parade that the ribs are flash-fried when ordered to crisp up the outside. The ribs are served on a toasted potato bun with Shake Shack's classic smoky barbecue sauce, coleslaw, and pickles.

Sales showed a positive response to the new sandwich. CEO Rob Lynch discussed its performance in a second-quarter earnings call in August 2026 (via Yahoo! Finance), stating: "We started off extremely strong ... and we had some concerns around our ability to even supply baby back rib throughout the planned period, and we were able to meet those demands and meet our expectations on the performance."

Shake Shack's customer-favorite sandwich was compared to the McRib

Customer kudos for the BBQ boneless baby back rib sandwich included praise for being exactly what it claims. One Reddit user wrote, "It's tender and real meat. ... All the goodness of pork ribs without any of the work." Another Redditor said in a different thread, "It is amazing. ... The meat is tender but also crispy," while someone else raved, "I promise it's earth shattering!!" However, some social media complaints said it was dry, in part because there wasn't enough barbecue sauce or coleslaw.

Shake Shack's seasonal pork sandwich, which chief communications officer Luke DeRouen noted took five years to get right, has 710 calories, 44 grams of protein, 46 grams of carbs, 39 grams of fat, and 21 grams of sugar. It was a bit pricey, selling for $12.99 to $14.99, depending on location. Unsurprisingly, it drew comparisons to McDonald's McRib.

The McRib debuted in 1981 and has a devoted following that eagerly awaits its occasional returns. There are two big differences between Shake Shack's and McDonald's BBQ sandwiches: the type of meat and price. Unlike Shake Shack's version, Mickey D's is actually pork shoulder ground and shaped to look like ribs. Its price reflects that difference, costing approximately half as much. When it last reappeared in November 2025, prices ranged from $5.49 to $6.99. Both have barbecue sauce and pickles, but the McRib has raw onion pieces instead of coleslaw and a long homestyle bun.
