We Ranked McDonald's Breakfast Sandwiches — This One Came In Last
McDonald's breakfast is a favorite among fast food breakfast fans, offering a variety of breakfast sandwiches made with griddle cakes, English muffins, and bagels and stuffed with combinations of egg, cheese, and meat. When Mashed ranked fast food breakfast from worst to best, McDonald's took home first prize. Still, not every McDonald's breakfast item is a winner. Upon ranking the chain's breakfast sandwiches, McDonald's Sausage Biscuit came in dead last.
The sausage biscuit is exactly what it sounds like: one sad sausage patty squished between two halves of a buttered biscuit. And that's exactly the problem, according to our reviewer. The measly filling is overwhelmed by the sheer amount of biscuit, resulting in a mouthful that really just tastes like biscuit. On top of that, the sandwich is super-dry thanks to the inclusion of zero moisture. Our reviewer described the sausage biscuit as a "crumbling pile of seemingly endless biscuit" and noted that some cheese would have really helped. Ultimately, while the two ingredients are fine on their own, their marriage in this sandwich is not a happy one.
How to salvage the sausage biscuit — and whether it's worth it
The best part about the sausage biscuit is its price tag. While it varies somewhat dramatically between locations, costing anywhere between $1.60 and $2.70, that still makes the sandwich one of the cheapest options. So in theory, you could try to upgrade it by ordering it with cheese or topping it with some syrup, honey, or jam for a boost of moisture and sweet flavor. Even ordering a side of hash browns to put on top might help. A cup of coffee or orange juice on the side could help wash it down too.
But the effort of trying to make it better really isn't worth it when you'd have to pay for add-ons and there are other, better options on the menu for a dollar or two more (or sometimes, depending on the location, less). If you're going to spend money eating out, you might as well shell out extra for something you actually want as opposed to ordering a fixer-upper.
The Sausage McMuffin, which comes with an English muffin stuffed with sausage and cheese, is often a similar price to the sausage biscuit but is much tastier. Our reviewer gave the Sausage McMuffin fourth place (making it the best McMuffin option), saying it has "a nearly perfect balance" of ingredients and is ultimately a "satisfying bite." If you really want a biscuit, honestly, it might be better to head to chains known for the best fast food biscuit sandwiches, like Carl's Jr. or Chick-fil-A. McDonald's biscuit sandwiches take up the bottom three spots in our ranking, consistently outperformed by better McMuffin and McGriddle options.
