The Hands-Down Worst Burger King Breakfast Sandwich Has A Meat Problem
Burger King is best known for its beefy handhelds and fries, but the fast food chain has also served breakfast for decades. The morning menu launched in 1979, then took off with the introduction of the Croissan'wich in 1983. Today, not all the sammies are worth the buy. In our ranking of Burger King breakfast sandwiches, we put the ham, egg, and cheese biscuit in last place, largely because of the meat.
Our taste tester likened the protein to "grocery store lunch meat." While there was a good amount on the sandwich, it was lackluster versus expectations. "Paired with a really well-executed biscuit and fluffy eggs, the ham feels like Burger King phoned it in. Especially compared with the other two meats, bacon and sausage. Not to get a single, thick, juicy piece of ham is a real letdown," our reviewer wrote.
The sandwich is simple and exactly as it sounds: Black Forest ham, fluffy folded eggs, and melted American cheese on a buttermilk biscuit. According to the ingredient information, the meat contains mostly ham, water, dextrose, and salt, plus natural smoke flavor, cultured celery juice for natural nitrites, and acerola cherry powder for color. The sandwich contains 420 calories, 32 grams of carbs, 24 grams of fat, 19 grams of protein, and three grams of added sugar.
Burger King's polarizing breakfast sandwiches
Some diners enjoy Burger King's morning menu, believing the fast food chain serves high-quality breakfast sandwiches. The sammies are praised for their size and in-app deals; the bacon specifically is beloved for its thickness and distinct smokiness. Ham has been on the breakfast menu for decades and an old menu from the 2000s (via Facebook) shows the Hamlette – deli ham, cheese, and honey butter on a sesame seed bun.
Generally, Burger King's fast food breakfast menu is average in terms of popularity. Some customers felt BK skimps on the egg with its sammies, citing a single sliver instead of a fluffy stack. Others have said the breakfast sandwiches are dry. As for the ham, reviews are mixed. "Ham is the best when it's a good BK and the worst when it's not. Cold ham on a Croissan'wich sucks," one Reddit user wrote. "I was told that their biscuit sandwich was much much better than McDonald's ... The biscuit was round, larger, ... and very buttery ... the egg was plentiful, the ham was good. It was an excellent biscuit, especially for a fast food restaurant," said a Facebook user.
According to our taste test, the meat went better with the croissant, so you may want to consider the ham, egg, and cheese Croissan'wich over the biscuit if you're a ham fan. However, our top pick was the biscuit sandwich with sausage instead of ham, so don't knock the bread. If you prefer bacon or sausage, consider the breakfast burritos, too.
