With so many different brews to choose from, consulting various reviews can help narrow down the top options. While you can of course look to lists like our ranking of classic American beers, positive recommendations will also help point customers to popular brands that likely won't disappoint. For 2026, it appears that beer drinkers are in support of a classic domestic: Samuel Adams.

That finding comes from YouGov's Most Recommended Brands of 2026 report, which includes a top 10 list of alcoholic beverages recommended among current customers. Samuel Adams ranks first with a score of 88.7%, followed closely by two brands of beer originally produced outside of the U.S.: Guinness (Ireland) and Stella Artois (Belgium). The list also features well-known names like Blue Moon and Heineken. YouGov based its conclusions on recommendation data from the previous 12 months.

The Samuel Adams brand is named after one of the Founding Fathers of the U.S., who had connections to the beer business himself. Tying in with that patriotic theme, the company's products are brewed in Boston, which has been described as the "birthplace of the American Revolution."  In that sense, the brand's drinks are as quintessentially American as beer can get (although it might surprise you to learn that 15 states banned Samuel Adams Utopias due to its extremely high alcohol content).

History of Samuel Adams beer and consumer opinions

Interestingly enough, Samuel Adams' success was partly made possible by a chance discovery. The recipe for its classic American-style beer was found in an attic. That is, in 1984, 34-year-old entrepreneur Jim Koch came across his great-great grandfather's instructions for Louis Koch Lager in the roof-adjacent room of his Ohio family home. Jim took this recipe to Boston and eventually crafted the Boston Lager everyone knows and loves today. Koch found the Boston Beer Company soon after and began selling Samuel Adams Boston Lager in restaurants and bars in the Boston area. The business continued to grow from there. A few years later, the Samuel Adams Brewery opened in Boston.

As an independently-owned company, Sam Adams' Boston-based facility maintains its status as a craft brewery. In addition to its flagship lager, the brand's core, year-round lineup includes its American Light lager, Cherry Wheat ale, New England Juicy IPA, and East Coast IPA.

A Reddit thread sheds some light on people's feelings about Samuel Adams' Boston Lager as a classically good brew. "Boston Lager is the beer that got me to start going on mouth adventures with beers," one user said. Another humorously wrote, "If aliens landed on Earth and asked me 'what is beer' I would probably serve them a Boston Lager. It's not too bitter, not too sweet, pretty neutral in color and weight. It's the beeriest beer I've ever beered."
