The Unexpectedly Popular Candy At Costco Shoppers Can't Stop Eating

Thanks to Costco's many offerings, the brand has managed to earn itself a loyal fan following. According to the brand's official website, Costco now has hundreds of outlets in eight countries, an impressive feat. By the way, as a warehouse club, Costco caters mostly to its members, offering them a variety of products at competitive rates. A description on the company's site reads, "Our operating philosophy has been simple. Keep costs down and pass the savings on to our members."

When it comes to the stuff you should be buying at Costco, some of the best items include bacon, rotisserie chicken, dark chocolate potato chips, and baked goods, according to Delish. However, specific items occasionally get popular among customers and make you want to come back for more. For example, a couple of months ago, shoppers took to Reddit to rave about a specific candy at Costco. Here are all the details.

Everyone is raving about this candy

A Reddit post warned about a specific type of Japanese candy from Costco called Hi-Chew. "Don't buy these. You will accidentally eat 20 a day because they are absolutely amazing," the post read. Other shoppers were quick to chime in with their views on the product. The candy seems to be rather addictive. A commentator wrote, "I did NOT need to know Costco is carrying these right now," their comment read. They added that they're definitely going to pick up the candy when they go on their grocery run. As of this writing, the post has garnered more than 100 comments and more than 850 upvotes.

Twitter users are just as enamored with the Japanese sweet treat, with many calling it downright addictive. One fan tweeted, This [hi] chew japanese candy is so addicting I pretty much ate the whole bag." Another labeled the candy, the best part of their day, posting: "Did a lot of things today! But the highlight of my day is buying two bars of [Hi-Chew]."

The story behind Hi-Chew candy

As per the official website, Hi-Chew "is uniquely soft candy with a long-lasting, chewy texture." The brand has a plethora of fruit-flavored candy for its customers including watermelon, strawberry, green apple, kiwi, grapefruit, mango, grape, banana, and more. In fact, the total number of flavors is now 170, and Hi-Chew is the most popular chewy candy in all of Japan.

The irresistible treat was first introduced in a bid to help Japanese locals enjoy chewing gum without feeling the need to remove it from their mouths, a gesture that was considered inappropriate in the 1950s. Hi-chew was a fruit-flavored chewing gum that could easily be swallowed without any dire consequences. Thankfully, it's now available in the U.S. as well and has managed to attract quite a bit of attention — and Costco shoppers have been among the very first to sing its praises.
