3-Ingredient Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats Recipe

Few treats are as simple as a classic Rice Krispies treat. They've been whipped up in kitchens for years and years, stealing the hearts of many. Chances are, whether you had them stashed away in your lunchbox, your mom had a plate ready for a homemade after-school snack, or you've grabbed a packaged Rice Krispies treat from the vending machine, you've enjoyed these simple snacks time and time again.

And while we don't like to mess with tried and true treats, sometimes there are simple ways to amp up a classic. And this recipe for chocolate Rice Krispies treats is definitely one of those times.

Using just three ingredients, this recipe will be ready for you in no time at all. And while these treats still feature the same combination of gooey marshmallows and crunchy rice cereal, it's taken up a notch with the addition of Cocoa Krispies to add a hint of chocolate flavor for a unique twist.

Gather the ingredients for these chocolate Rice Krispie treats

To get started on making these chocolate Rice Krispie treats at home, first gather your ingredients to set you up for success. All you'll need is a few simple ingredients that can be found at any store.

Grab half of a cup (or one stick) of butter, two 10-ounce bags of mini marshmallows, and nine cups of Cocoa Krispies cereal. If you can't find Cocoa Krispies, another brand of chocolate crispy rice cereal will certainly work.

Melt the butter and marshmallows for these chocolate Rice Krispie treats

To make your chocolate Rice Krispie treats, start by preparing your workspace. Spray a 9-inch by 13-inch rectangular pan with cooking spray. Be sure to spray the pot you'll be using to melt the marshmallows, along with the spoon or spatula you plan to use. This will prevent the marshmallow from sticking too much.

Place a large Dutch oven or pot on the stove and turn it on to medium heat. Add in the butter and allow it to melt fully. Once the butter is fully melted, pour in the mini marshmallows (reserving a cup and a half for later). Stir the marshmallows and butter together until the marshmallows are melted.

Add the Cocoa Krispies cereal for these chocolate Rice Krispies treats

Once the marshmallow and butter mixture is fully melted and smooth, it's time to add the Cocoa Krispies cereal to finish these treats. Pour the Cocoa Krispies directly into the melted marshmallow mixture and stir well. Then, stir in the rest of the marshmallows.

If you don't have a pot that's big enough, you can certainly pour the Cocoa Krispies into a large bowl and then pour in the melted marshmallow mixture over top. That way, you'll have plenty of room to stir the mixture until well combined.

Press and let the chocolate Rice Krispies treats set

Once the mixture is prepared, scoop the contents of the Dutch oven into the prepared 9-inch by 13-inch pan. Spread the mixture with a spoon, and then use your hands to press it down. Be sure not to press the mixture down too firmly, or it will compress too much. Once pressed into the pan, allow the chocolate Rice Krispies treats to set for at least 20 minutes before cutting into squares.
