Air Fryer Tortilla Chips Recipe

Whether you're having people over for an event, attending a social gathering, or just fancy a crunchy snack, chips tend to be a necessary party-goer (if you will); however, if you want something different –– in other words, if you don't want to go the store-bought route –– then chef and recipe developer Susan Olayinka of The Flexible Fridge has you covered.

Olayinka crafted and perfected an air fryer tortilla chips recipe that takes just seven minutes to cook each batch, serves four, and only requires three ingredients.

Perks of this recipe include the fact that an air fryer makes it quicker to cook these chips and requires less oil than a deep fryer. And if you want to make this an even healthier option, Olayinka says whole wheat tortillas can adequately replace white flour tortillas.

"These are a must-try," Olayinka said. "If you have an air fryer, it's a given! It's so quick. And you can whip up a tasty snack very fast." Follow these steps to create homemade chips in the comfort of your home.

Gather the ingredients for the chips

To make this air fryer tortilla chips recipe, you'll need flour tortilla wraps, oil, and salt. It's that simple!

Although extra-virgin olive oil is used for this recipe, Olayinka says other oils, such as rapeseed oil, could be incorporated instead.

Outside of the ingredients, you'll also need an air fryer — the unsung hero of this recipe — and a mixing bowl. A cutting board and knife are also essential for cutting the tortillas. As this recipe makes four servings, you can also get out four bowls or plates ahead of time.

Cut your tortillas into triangles

First, you'll place the tortilla wraps on a cutting board, one by one. You'll then slice each wrap in half. Next, slice that half into triangles. Each wrap will form roughly 13 to 15 triangles (a.k.a. your future chips).

Now that the tortilla wraps have been formed into triangles, you'll put them in a mixing bowl and add the extra-virgin olive oil and salt to the bowl –– and then mix.

Season the triangles with oil and salt

Once the triangles are covered with oil and salt, you'll place them in a single layer in the air fryer tray. You'll be tempted to just toss all the triangles in at once, but they won't get crispy that way.

If you have a smaller air fryer, you won't be able to make many chips at a time, but if you don't want soggy chips, you'll need to work in batches so air can circulate around them and make them crispy. "I did it in three batches," says Olayinka.

Cook the triangles in the air fryer

You'll then cook the triangles for seven minutes at 375 F. They should be golden and crispy, like the photo.

Depending on their size and how close they were to other triangles, some will be a bit more golden than others, so you can take out the ones that are done and give the others an extra minute if you want them all to be exactly the same. Or just move on to the next batch.

Transfer the tortilla chips from the air fryer to a serving plate

Repeat the process of lining the tortilla triangles in a single layer in the air fryer tray and then cooking them for seven minutes at 375 F until all the tortilla chips are cooked and then transfer them to serving plates or a big bowl. Depending on the size of your air fryer, the cooking step could be longer or shorter –– but always make sure to cook each batch for seven minutes and adjust your cooking schedule accordingly.

If you desire, you can serve these chips with guacamole and salsa, or another cherished dipping sauce.
