This McDonald's Breakfast Item Is Only Available In The South

When thinking about fast food chains, there are a couple assumptions many people might feel are safe to make: You'll get your food quickly, it'll be cheap, and you'll have the same options no matter which location you go to. While these first two, for the most part, are pretty accurate — though, we've all had those unfortunate moments where the restaurant feels unexplainably backed up — the third one is actually not the case.

McDonald's, one of the most popular fast food restaurants in the United States, doesn't have quite as consistent a menu across its locations as one might guess. Yes, you're nearly guaranteed to be able to get a Big Mac and fries at any location, but there are some items that are only available in locations in certain regional areas.

The Southern part of the US, for example, has one menu item you likely can't find in other McDonald's locations. Spoiler alert: It's not fried chicken, collard greens, or mashed potatoes. Although, if your instinct was to think about specialty Southern dishes, you're definitely on the right track. It's actually not a lunch or dinner item at all (at least not traditionally), but rather a common breakfast food.

McDonald's in the South may offer biscuits and gravy

If you head to a McDonald's in the South when morning time comes, you may be able to order yourself some good old-fashioned biscuits and gravy. As The Travel writes, "The East Coast loves their seafood just as much as the South loves their biscuits and gravy." And it's this exact reason that select McDonald's stores in this region carry this staple comfort food.

So if you live in, or will be traveling to, the lower part of the continental US, it's definitely worth the venture to go to a Mickey D's to try this hearty meal for yourself. Starting with the chain's classic, flaky buttery biscuits, the meal is then topped off with oozy sausage gravy.

However, it's not a guarantee you'll find biscuits and gravy in every McDonald's store south of the Mason-Dixon. According to FoodBeast, McDonald's used to have an official menu listing as "Big Breakfast – Country Sausage Biscuit and Gravy," but now it seems to be more of a secret menu item, and currently there's no specific list of the stores where you may find it on the McDonald's website.

While you might have the most luck at a Southern location, McDonald's biscuits and gravy have even been found as far north as Michigan and Tennessee, according to the FoodBeast article, so even if you're not in the right region, it never hurts to ask.
