Gordon Ramsay Fans Are Drooling Over His Caramelized Onion Everything Dip

Onions in dip are most definitely a thing, which is why there are so many different types of dried onion dip packets in supermarkets. While it probably wouldn't occur to many of us to use fresh onions to create something both original and mouthwatering because it might seem too fiddly, British chef Gordon Ramsay has a recipe which you may not be able to refuse.

In a social media post, the star chef walks you through the process of what he calls "Everything Dip." It sounds like something you'd make if you were to take all the ingredients in your kitchen and put that all together, except that the mouthwatering creation is made with caramelized onions, buttermilk, crème fraîche, and a homemade everything seasoning (via Instagram). In case you were wondering, his everything seasoning includes two types of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried minced garlic and onion, as well as flaky sea salt (via Gordon Ramsay).

Caramelized onions turn this dip into a flavor experience

While we might be forgiven for thinking that the homemade everything seasoning is the magic ingredient to this delectable dip, we'd like to think that the seasoning, along with the caramelized onions, both play a role in adding an unexpected depth to the dish's flavor. Caramelizing onions is a low, slow process that involves cooking down finely sliced onions until the rings have turned into a golden, sweetly scented pile of onion mash. Serious Eats says the best type of onions to work with are yellow onions, thanks to the presence of certain compounds known as lachrymators. In a raw onion, these chemicals can bring you to tears, but in a caramelized onion, they will melt down and create more subtle flavors.

The key to creating the perfect caramelized onions involves triggering what is known in cooking as the maillard reaction, which causes certain foods to turn brown as they cook over certain temperatures. Once the onions have reached peak brown perfection, they're ready to be made into anything from soups to dips.
