TikTok's Copycat Disneyland Corn Dog Brings The Magic To Your Home

It was a challenge, but we found a way to make a hot dog unhealthier: the corn dog. Though its origin is a disputed mess, corn dogs have been around since 1929, when Stanley S. Jenkins of Buffalo, New York was granted a patent to dip sausages skewered with a wooden stick into a cornbread batter and deep-fried in vegetable oil.

A staple at state fairs, corn dogs have also been known by their brand names: Corny Dogs, Pronto Pups, and Krusty Korn Dogs. In Minnesota, the home of Pronto Pups and disputed birthplace of the tasty treat, corn dogs were honored in 2016 with a state resolution declaring that Pronto Pups played an essential part in the Minnesota State Fair's history, one of the largest state fairs in the country.

Pronto Pups have been served at the Minnesota State Fair since 1947. They are now found in parks nationwide, including "The Happiest Place on Earth," Disneyland, where visitors have plenty of food options, including several varieties of tubed meat on a stick. Disneyland's Corn Dog Castle serves three types of corn dogs: original, hot link, and cheddar stick. If a trip to California is missing from the calendar, we've got a simple copycat recipe you can make at home (no, it doesn't have Mickey Mouse ears on it).

Easy peasy corn dogs

The ingenious idea to replace a hot dog bun with fried corn batter is beloved by many, including former American talk show host Oprah Winfrey and her BFF Gayle King, who have enjoyed Texas' corny dogs with a squirt of mustard at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. Although we missed National Corn Dog Day (March 18), there's plenty of time to enjoy this treat at home.

This Disneyland corn dog copycat recipe via TikTok combines all-purpose flour, corn meal, an egg, baking powder, granulated sugar, Kosher salt, and buttermilk into a wet batter. The corn dog batter is transferred to a tall mason jar or drinking glass, and an all-beef hot dog impaled by a wooden skewer is dipped inside, although any type of hot dog would work. The battered hot dog is dropped into hot vegetable oil that has reached 390 F and cooked until golden brown.

Unlike the original Pronto Pups of Minnesota, which could only be served with a squirt of mustard or left plain, per management, you can use any condiment you like when you make them at home, including the once-forbidden topping, ketchup. Mini corn dogs can also be made as a tasty appetizer using mini franks, Lil Smokies, or cocktail weenies on skewers.
