Popular Klondike Bar Flavors, Ranked Worst To Best

What would you do for a Klondike Bar? It's the age-old question. But as long as you have a local grocery store with a relatively robust frozen section, you won't have to do anything too drastic to get your hands on a box of these celebrated ice cream sandwiches. Klondike Bars are unlike a lot of other ice cream novelties out there because they're basically just blocks of ice cream that are covered in a crunchy layer of chocolate. There's no cookie to contend with: just that cold, creamy ice cream and an extra layer of sweetness from the chocolate outside.

The original flavor is always going to be good, but you may not know that there are a ton of other Klondike flavors out there as well. And if you are looking to get the most out of your ice cream-eating experience, then you should probably check out all of the options so you make sure you choose the best one. Of course, we all have different opinions, but we've come up with a ranking of Klondike flavors to help you out a bit. That way, you'll know which box to pick up the next time you find yourself in the ice cream section wondering what to get. Let's start with the worst and work our way up to the best.

14. Neapolitan

It shouldn't be surprising to see the Neapolitan Klondike Bar end up with the worst ranking on our list. But we'll say this first: Pretty much all Klondike Bars are delicious. After all, how can you go wrong with a block of ice cream with a solid chocolate coating? However, some flavors are definitely better than others, and when you compare them, we think that most people would put Neapolitan at the bottom of their list as well.

A lot of people don't like Neapolitan already because of its strange combo of flavors, and they're certainly not highlighted well here. The vanilla is plain and expected but offers a nice flavor. The chocolate tastes a bit too rich, even though it doesn't have a super-strong distinct flavor. It's not delicious, but it's okay. The strawberry ice cream is where things go really wrong here. The strawberry ice cream tastes almost medicinal — not natural-tasting at all. And it's so sugar-y that it just doesn't seem to play well with the other flavors.

In fact, you may find yourself enjoying this ice cream sandwich until you get to the strawberry part, only then to realize that you don't want to finish it. While ice cream could be worse, when it comes to Klondike Bars, we think that the Neapolitan is a flavor you should ignore completely.

13. Frosted Strawberry Donut

It may disturb you to learn that Klondike does, in fact, offer Klondike Bar "donuts." Should you eat these things for breakfast? Absolutely not. But you should also probably not eat a real donut anyway, so who are we to judge? What where we will judge, though is the flavor of the frosted strawberry donut Klondike Bar. Yes, this thing is just as bad as it sounds. It's strawberry ice cream that has a strawberry swirled filling inside that's covered in a coating of chocolate. The strawberry ice cream is not good, and the chocolate doesn't do enough to cover it up. Though it's square-shaped like a normal Klondike Bar, it also has a hole in the middle to make it look like a donut. This hole is completely pointless, and it really just means you get less food.

The only reason this ice cream donut didn't score even worse, is the fact that it at least looks appealing. With the white swirl topping and multi-colored sprinkles, it looks fun — even if it doesn't taste that way.

12. Boston Cream Donut

Who doesn't love Boston cream-flavored desserts? A lot of people, actually. The flavor isn't for everyone — you have to like your desserts really sweet, and you have to not mind the cold, jiggly texture of the cream. But if you're into the taste, then you might think about getting a Boston cream donut Klondike Bar. This is one of the more unusual flavors available, so we salute Klondike for doing something new and interesting. But in our opinion, it was kind of a fail. One reviewer agreed. They said, "Total disappointment in this product. Artificial flavoring taste, no where close to that of a Boston Cream flavoring and the donut shape just reveals less for the same price."

We think that's an accurate assessment. The flavor? Not great. For the most part, it just tastes like a whole lot of sugar. Plus, as the reviewer said, nobody wants to pay the same amount of money for less food, so we don't love that the donut flavors have holes in them.

11. Krunch

In theory, the Krunch Klondike Bar should taste really good. The ice cream in the middle is the standard vanilla you're used to in any ice cream sandwich, but the chocolate coating is where this one should shine. The chocolate includes pieces of puffed rice to give you a unique and slightly crunchy texture that gives off strong Nestle Crunch and Krackle vibes. And while that sounds amazing, especially for those of us who like a little extra crunch, it's actually far from delicious.

First of all, it's really, really sweet. We're not sure why, but it actually tastes a lot sweeter than the original. While that may be appealing to some people, we think most will find the extra sweetness kind of off-putting and difficult to enjoy.

One blogger expressed their annoyance at how thin the chocolate coating is: "Klondike Krunch ice cream bar has a thinner layer of chocolate so that it honestly doesn't even hold up to the ice cream that is on the inside. It ends up being just one pile of mush that you bite into because there isn't a significant enough of a texture difference between the outer chocolate coating and the vanilla ice cream middle."

When you put those factors together, it becomes clear that, of all the available Klondike Bar flavors, this is one you should probably ignore.

10. Oreo Bar

Who doesn't like Oreo-flavored everything? If Oreos are your go-to cookies, then you're probably going to have this Klondike Bar flavor on your list. However, we're here to tell you that the Oreo Bar isn't everything it may seem. We assumed that this option would be bursting with flavor, but we're disappointed to tell you that it just wasn't. While you can see the bits of cookie that are mixed in with the ice cream in this bar, when you take a bite, you'll barely be able to taste them at all.

A reviewer on Klondike's own website complained about this issue as well, saying, "These have only the slightest whisper of Oreo cookies, if you're lucky. Mostly they're microscopic black specks here and there. Do Oreos really come at that much of a premium to where they can't afford to load these with the cookie that's plastered all over the package? The ice cream is good but I won't be buying these again."

If you buy something that is advertised as having Oreos in it, that's probably what you want. When you get this flavor of Klondike Bars, you may not get exactly what you're expecting.

9. Heath

If you're the kind of person who absolutely loves Heath bars, then you're in luck when it comes to this ice cream sandwich. Heath Bar Klondike Bars bring a whole new meaning to the word "decadent," and if you have a sweet tooth, there's a great chance you're going to love them. The ice cream is the standard ice cream situation you would expect from a Klondike Bar, but the chocolate coating is where the magic happens. It's got little toffee pieces in the chocolate, giving it an interesting texture you won't find in the other Klondike options.

Unfortunately, though, this flavor wasn't as good as we wanted it to be. Why? Well, even though the idea was good, it just ended up being way, way too sweet. The ice cream and the chocolate are already a lot to deal with, but when you add in the toffee? It's too much.

Of course, if you have a massive sweet tooth or just really love Heath bars, then it may still be worth a try. Otherwise, there are other, better Klondike flavors on the market that you should check out instead.

8. Original

Sometimes, you just shouldn't mess with a classic. When it comes to Klondike Bars, you really can't go wrong with the original. The creamy, silky chocolate pairs perfectly with that rich chocolate covering that offers just the perfect amount of crunch. What's not to love? So, you may be wondering why the original Klondike Bar didn't end up with a better ranking from us?

You should know that it's not that the original flavor isn't good — it totally is. But when compared to some of the other available flavors, it's clear that the original just doesn't come out on top. We'll always remember it, but when it comes time to get an ice cream bar from the frozen food aisle, most of the time, we're going to go with one of the other more interesting flavors available.

However, not everyone likes switching it up and trying something new. Others are just trying to indulge in a feeling of nostalgia when they bite into the original. If that's your thing, go for it. If you're feeling more adventurous, though, take a look at the other offerings as well.

7. Triple Chocolate Donut

Not everyone is a fan of chocolate everything. After all, chocolate can be super rich and overwhelming if you don't love the flavor. But for the huge chocolate lovers out there, the triple chocolate donut may just be a dream come true. The chocolate cake fried dough interior is out of this world, and that's what will keep you coming back for more. It's truly something different. The dark chocolate coating is quite rich, and this is where we think some people may draw the line. But overall, it's super tasty. The milk chocolate drizzle on top adds even more rich flavor, but it's a bit lighter than the coating.

So, our verdict? The triple chocolate donut gets high marks from us because we're chocolate fans through and through. If you love chocolate just as much as we do, go for it. If you want something a bit less rich, though, this isn't the dessert for you.

6. Mint Chocolate Chip

One flavor we love from the Klondike Bar line? The mint chocolate chip bar. We'll be honest: We wanted to include this higher up in our rankings because it seriously is tasty. However, we know that this is a controversial opinion — not everyone likes mint ice cream, and we're trying to respect that. But if you're a fan of mint ice cream (especially when it's paired with chocolate), then you're going to fall in love with this flavor.

The bright green ice cream tastes quite minty, but the flavor of it isn't overwhelming like you may experience in some other mint ice creams. The normal chocolate shell holds it all together and gives you something to hold onto as you eat your ice cream bar. The best part of this flavor, though, are the chocolate chips that are actually in the ice cream. All that chocolate really balances out the lighter flavor of the mint, and it all seems to come together perfectly.

5. Dark Chocolate

When you first open up a dark chocolate Klondike Bar, you may think you've gotten the wrong thing. At first glance, the dark chocolate flavor looks exactly like the original, and it could throw you off at first. But once you take a bite of this ice cream bar, you're going to be able to tell that something is different than what you're used to from a Klondike Bar. While this ice cream bar is still incredibly sweet, it's got a distinct bitterness and richness to it that you'll only get from dark chocolate.

True chocolate lovers know that dark chocolate is better and more chocolate-y, so if you're the type who always looks for dark chocolate, then this is the Klondike Bar for you. Just be warned: This isn't the darkest chocolate you've ever tried, so you shouldn't be expecting that. It's still got some sweetness to it, so it's great for those who are trying to work their way into enjoying dark chocolate.

4. Wake Me Up Coffee Donut

If you're looking for a Klondike Bar you can convince yourself is appropriate to eat for breakfast, then you should be on the lookout for the Wake Me Up Coffee Donut Klondike Bar. This is definitely one of the more interesting flavors in the lineup, and if you love coffee, we think you're going to love this too. The coffee flavor is definitely strong, but it's balanced out nicely with the sweetness of the chocolate coating. Since the coating is dark chocolate, it goes really well with the richness of the coffee ice cream.

While this is a simple combination, it's an intensely flavorful one, and there's a good chance it'll have you coming back for more. And the best part? Since these are coffee-flavored, the kids probably aren't going to sneak them out of the freezer — so this one may just be perfect for all the parents out there.

3. Reese's

If you're looking for an ice cream novelty that reminds you of your favorite candy, then you're in luck. Reese's Klondike Bars are out of this world. When you first bite into these, you might notice that the appearance doesn't look that special. Once you taste the salty peanut butter flavor mixing with the creaminess of the ice cream and the richness of the chocolate, though, you're going to fall in love right away.

We were afraid that the peanut butter flavor in this dessert would be too strong, but that's definitely not an issue. A reviewer from Klondike's website agrees with us, stating, "These bars are so incredibly delicious! The ice cream is creamy, the peanut butter is strong but not overwhelming, there is just enough crunch and it doesn't fall apart and become a mess — it melts nicely in your mouth!"

People who are huge fans of Reese's absolutely have to try this treat.

2. Double Chocolate

Sure, the original Klondike Bar is delicious, especially if you love chocolate. But if you're the kind of person who takes their love of chocolate to the next level, then you might want to go for something different. Why not try the Double Chocolate Klondike Bar? If you love rich desserts, then you're going to go crazy for this flavor. The milk chocolate shell is the same as the coating you'll find with the original, but the inside is totally different: It's actually chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla.

The end result is a super-rich dessert that somehow manages to stay refreshing. Because you're dealing with milk chocolate and not dark chocolate here, the flavor isn't overwhelming: You're not going to want to put this bar down after you've had just a few bites. Instead, the creamy chocolate ice cream plays well with the solid chocolate, giving you an ice cream experience unlike any other.

The Double Chocolate Klondike Bar may not have taken our top spot, but it was pretty close.

1. Brownie Fudge Swirl

Are you the kind of person who always wants the best of the best? Are you looking for the ultimate Klondike Bar you can share with your family (or hoard all for yourself)? If so, the number one flavor you have to try from the brand is the Brownie Fudge Swirl. We admit, it's super indulgent, so you shouldn't try to eat one of these unless you have an intense craving for dessert. Once you do try it, though, it may just become your favorite Klondike Bar flavor.

The chocolate ice cream inside the milk chocolate shell features ribbons of chocolate brownies. This gives you a completely new texture to enjoy, and the richness is off the charts. When it all comes together, it tastes fantastic. A reviewer on Klondike's site pretty much summed it up for us: "As a person that loves chocolate, I was very happy when this variety came to my favorite grocery store. It's the perfect dessert on a hot day or even a cold day if you enjoy them as much as I do."

When you're ready to try the most delicious Klondike Bar out there, you know what to get.
