Mashed surveyed 634 U.S. diners to see what they thought the best doughnut at Krispy Kreme was, and the results were pretty clear — 47.95% of respondents indicated that the must-order item was the Original Glazed doughnut. Sometimes, simplicity is key, and you just have to stick with the classics. If you manage to get your hands on an Original Glazed while it's still hot and fresh, even better — you truly have a culinary masterpiece on your hands.
A few other doughnuts to consider trying
If you're just going to sample one doughnut at Krispy Kreme, it obviously has to be the Original Glazed — the fact that nearly 50% of survey respondents flagged it as the best choice is no coincidence. However, if you're getting a couple, or you simply want to try something new, there were a few others that survey respondents found to be quite tasty. Coming in second and third place, respectively, were the Chocolate Iced Glazed and the Apple Fritter doughnuts, with 15.77% and 14.51% of survey respondents indicating they were the best doughnuts on offer at the chain. Again, there seems to be a particular penchant for the classics when it comes to Krispy Kreme's fare.
Only 7.10% indicated that the Cake Batter doughnut was their preferred order, while a mere 5.68% and 6.15% flagged the Glazed Cinnamon and Maple Iced Glazed as their favorites — those flavors are tasty in most breakfast fare, but it seems they don't translate as well to the doughnut world. Finally, the Glazed Cruller received only 2.84% of votes, despite not being all that different than the Original Glazed in premise — it seems that the shape and type of batter makes a difference in how doughnut lovers enjoy the sweet treats.
